A security arrangement involving the Los Angeles Police Department and former Vice President Kamala Harris has officially come to an end, following intense backlash from the city’s police union and growing concerns over the misuse of public resources.
According to a report by The New York Times, LAPD’s elite Metropolitan Division had been providing security for Harris after President Donald Trump terminated her federal Secret Service protection on August 29. However, that LAPD support was rescinded over the weekend after the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) — the union representing rank-and-file officers — slammed the move as an inappropriate and costly use of city resources.
“This was nuts,” the union said in a blunt statement. “LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.” The LAPPL emphasized that Metro Division officers should be focused on tackling crime in Los Angeles, not acting as private security for a political figure living in a multimillion-dollar estate.
