The US Civil War started with the Republican North wanting heavy tarrifs on imported machinery.
The Democrat South wanted low tarrifs so they could by cheaper foreign made machinery for the cotton farms.
When the Democrat lost the tax vote they succeeded from the Union.
We are seeing that same alignment now with the added communist angle.
