Is it really necessary to connect to that many relays though? Why not just use the user defined relay list?

Not sure this is helpful. I used to be sble to specify the relays I want to use. Now it conneczs to seemingly every relay in existence.

If you are using new Amethyst it is running outbox model. The 133 relays reflects the number of relays your follows use to send their notes to. This ensures you fetch the notes from where the sent them. Just like in your relay settings you chose where to send your notes to. Not a bad thing, it is a transparent display of what your client is connected to.

As I understand it, Amethyst is using the "other" user's list of where they send notes to. This is allowing Amethyst to connect to the relays those users sent their notes to just like they fetch notes from where you defined to send notes to. I send my public notes to oxtr. Others fetch them from there.
