Midnight, turning over in bed. hearing my heart beat in the pillow. alone, i think to myself, "i'm already living the life of 70 year old widows and widowers with 30 years to go". A bang outside and a cow moos. "has she fallen into a hole" my brain tries to interpret the timbre of the moo. these creatures are so giant and gentle. They need humans. the cows are black and bull is red with a white face. by the amount of calves popping out on the daily, he must be busy, but he appears laid-back. he's always with one cow or the other. he will spend all day with one--grazing by her side, licking her neck. she puts her ears back--sign of pleasure if i ever saw one.. The cows have had their calves shipped off to market for $2000 a pop. sky high cattle prices right now... for the next 2 nights after the calves are gone, the cows moan with their moos throughout the night. it sounds like crying. but the bigger calves are a drain on the mothers. now that they are gone, the cows can eat less. they've even been laying in the field in the sun. it's like vacation time. and the bull is sidling up beside one or the other. i can almost hear him "do you want a little one that looks like you or me". half of the calves are black like their mom, the rest are red with a white face like their dad, and then there's a few odd balls that are black with a white face.. anyway. the farm reeks of fertility.
