Some have deviously tried to draw a link between BIP110 and the Coldcard thefts.
The reverse is true: this space is profoundly unserious.
"They're valid transactions, stop trying to censor people bro"
..mirrors the frivolous..
"It's just 12 words, self custody is easy bro"
I've been seeing this brainlessness permeate and dominate the space over the last few years especially.
BIP110 is a preventative measure endorsed by people with the network's long term health in mind. It takes time for a person to properly digest what it does and the context in which it does it.
Unserious objections to the tune of:
"It doesn't stop all spam"
"It doesn't have consensus"
"The nodes are all fake"
"It confiscates UTXOs"
"Knots only has one developer"
...are what needs to stop and are exactly why the fork should be adopted and activated without drama because they are either straight up lies, or misrepresented half-truths.
People rely on intelligent, respected voices in the space to make judgements and commentary about technical topics and they have been abandoned entirely by an elite who discredit good ideas with disingenuous but technically-valid-sounding objections.
@NVK himself has long been guilty of this, and us for tolerating it.
We say "don't trust, verify" but this doesn't mean influential and respected names in the space can lie through their teeth with no accountability.
Now that people are being called to up their game with regard to self-custody we have to address the fact that NVK spent years trashing air-gapped, general purpose hardware as an approach.
He went so far as to squat all the @seedsigner domain space, all redirecting to websites where he would tell people that bitcoin-specific hardware was unequivocally better.
Well is it?
No. Because no one using a Seedsigner got robbed yesterday did they. (Unless it contained a seed generated on a Coldcard without dicerolls).
Turns out self-custody IS difficult and that buying a $150 signer doesn't somehow make you your own bank with the appropriate level of security.
Time to take self-custody seriously. And stop shilling products you have no basis to be vouching for created by unrepentant narcissists.
With regard to Bitcoin itself, seriousness means fixing what has been broken with opening up datacarriersize, and activating taproot.
BIP110 crossed 19% today.
Enforcement begins in 8 days.
As ever, I'm happy to hear sensible objections and/or better ideas.
I believe those who want to continue acting like children are going to find that people are tired of the consequences of the immaturity and complacency that has taken over this space.
