When it comes to appreciation, words are only half the toll. Action is the other half. Appreciation without measurable action is usually bullshit. Usually because there are edge cases. They're rare though.

It takes so much more than action. One of the biggest turning points for me was "you figured out how to save us millions a year recurring, here is a $3 trophy. No there will not be a raise. No there won't even be a title only promotion."
They took action. The action was an insult.
I have that trophy prominently placed years later as a reminder.
