Thought of the day 💭
Almost two years ago, #nostr stood out as a shining example of decentralized communication, capturing the attention of many. But now, it feels like we’ve hit a standstill. The lack of innovation and growth in nostr client ecosystem is becoming a real concern.
Lack of New Features: The daily platforms we use are constantly evolving, yet Nostr clients haven’t kept up. Users look forward to regular updates and new functionalities to improve their experience, but that progress has stalled.
Limited Diversity: There’s a noticeable lack of variety in client design, functionality, and user experience. This sameness might restrict Nostr’s broader appeal and fail to meet the diverse needs of its users.
Declining User Engagement: Without fresh, engaging content and tools, we risk losing the momentum that once made nostr community so vibrant. Keeping users engaged is essential for maintaining and growing the platform’s active base.
It’s time for us to start worrying about this. We need to encourage diverse client developments, and find ways to boost user engagement to ensure nostr continues to thrive as a leading decentralized communication platform. Otherwise it’s might end up in echo chamber and stagnation circle.

I feel like the nostr protocol is something like the bitcoin first layer. It’s the bedrock and we are building on that.
Most of the software/services out there are working just fine for the general public. It’s sad that the bob does not care about what their nostr clones does for him but he has to keep his life on track after all. He just wants the stuff to work.
But in the end the nostr ease of use case with just a key pair for all services that you want to use is quite convincing. We are just not there yet but I think we are going strong. It’s not like nostr is as shiny new as, let’s say, ChatGPT when it comes to end user appeal. Nostr devs are kind of cloning all the stuff that’s out there for now. But once the ecosystem is there and it’s easier to use than the complicated combination of tools/services out there we (and of course the users) will win. I think it is just going to take time since nostr is not a multi billion dollar corporation that can focus on making whatever as appealing as possible. Nostr will get there because nostr protocol makes better solutions possible but those have to be built first.
And of course we have the plebs out there with significant future wealth. And usually average Joe tends to use what the popular rich guys are using. So this will be a plus in the coming years. And also two years is just enough to let the hype fade and get the building done to prepare for the new hype.
No, it’s not the same as bitcoin protocol. It served different purposes.
Nostr current stagnation in innovation and limited client diversity hinder its growth. Without introducing new features, enhancing user experience, and fostering a diverse range of clients, Nostr may struggle to achieve the widespread appeal and functionality needed to thrive. Just onboard normie and you will see how fast he or she will stop using it, then ask the reason! It’s crucial for Nostr to accelerate its development and differentiate itself to fulfill its potential distinct from protocols like Bitcoin.
