I don't think obtainium verifies though, it just blindly installs stuff, no?

Yes and yes! Unfortunately not all open source apps can be obtain(ium)ed. Some developers choose to not use github or not have it build releases. Second best option is to use f-droid.

I still do not understand how Amber works. Tried to log in some apps but did not work 🙈. zap.store is also fantastic besides obtainium.
