Is it also possible the buyer's lying and wanted a free hat? Could they have sent a lightning payment to their own wallet?
Hopefully not the case, but it could be another angle.

yeah, that is a possibility too. there are many angles but very difficult to know what's true.
I think it goes to show how doing business on nostr is at your own risk and very much trust based.
