You don't need to be 100% self-sufficient if you build a community to trade and cooperate. Division of labour is better. But you do need those community ties to be strong enough to prevent rats and feds from destroying it.

You should first start the community with a common and deep understanding of reality. This means religion. Instead of starting your own cult which will fell prey to social trouble, go to the church. The buildings of the church often called ships for a reason. Then you have your people and you can buy stuff suitable to your job in the community.
