When Soviet archaeologists opened Timur’s tomb in 1941, it had an inscription that read: “Whoever disturbs my tomb will unleash a conqueror worse than I.” They opened it anyway — and two days later, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. Later, when Timur’s body was reburied with Muslim rites, the Soviets began winning battles again.
