I scanned the QR code for the space invite, and requested access. I was then redirected to input an invite code. I copy and pasted that same invite code and now it shows 'access denied' for that dummy user in the space. I don't see any option from my web login on this nostr account to approve the new user to my space.

It sounds like you tried to access the space with a different user from the one you signed up with? Or did you sign in with that user first and then generate an invite code for the dummy user? Invite codes should auto-add members, but let me know if that's not working.
