Debate is often unproductive and frustrating to observe or participate in. Ideally the contentious side would have a wise and neutral party to critique the contentious idea thoroughly. Usually though both sides are contentious and critique the other using their own ideas and since their own ideas are already in contention it is hard to discredit the other or bolster their own.
LLMs are nice to debate with (assuming not biased to engagement and sycophancy) because they can simulate wisdom and neutrality quite well - the diluted ego helps too.
I try, in arguments and debates, not to argue from my ideologies but to critique the opposition's ideas on their own terms as much as possible. Though I rarely achieve that :)
