That article is about a developer who loved Apple and got stabbed in the back by it. That's what happens to anyone who trusts an overgrown institution like that.

Three backups: Umbrel Home backup, encrypted cloud backup, local desktop backup. Still do an encrypted cloud backup in case of natural disasters that destroys home desktop and server but don’t depend on it.

Computer is a abstraction, if it runs a stand alone encrypted program, none knows what are you doing unless making a cpu debug. If the network are inside a cryptografic system, none knows what you are send or recevieng, if it use use TOR, then you are the owner of YOUR SYSTEM, else, you are transfering known how to your service provider and giving to they your client list. Information have more value than the hardware, but who care about? A real private information system may be very expensive! Self custody is a way of life ! No ?
