The early years are shrouded in the mists of time; it was only at the age of 42 that it began to blossom. After about 44 years, dinosaurs populated the planet. Just under eight months ago, the first mammals evolved, and over the course of the last week, hominid beings emerged. Modern humans have only been around for four hours. Sixty minutes ago, they learned agriculture, and one minute ago, the industrial revolution began. In these last sixty seconds, humans have turned Gaia into a rubbish dump, wiped out thousands of plant and animal species, killed hundreds of millions of their own kind, plundered the planet's raw material reserves, poisoned the soil, air and water, and burdened future generations with radioactive waste.
