Accidentally posted this under another comment: I'm not a Bitchat user or fanboy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it open source? Is it actually logging Bluetooth devices or just scanning and connecting to form a mesh? Is it uploading logs? Is it uploading GPS data?

Open source and audited are not the same thing. Even audits miss things. Obfuscated code is an issue also. Someone interested should do a packet capture to start. For me, it isn't worth the risk chat apps that look less sketchy are easy to find.
