This made me think of, ‘Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation, for your character is what you are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.’ (Dale Carnegie) In online settings it’s all about reputation and it can be difficult to assess character. Its not impossible though, if you follow over a long enough time horizon. True colors shine through.

Character and reputation are closely related. Someone with a good character is unlikely to have a bad reputation. But in edge cases with artificial actors, character is indeed more important. Meeting people in person, or observing their activity over long periods of time, helps with that.
