Worse, the ecosystem is currently drowned in a relentless firehose of spammy Bitcoin evangelism, Christian proselytising, and libertarian manifestos. At the end of the day it's a surveillance tool wrapped in ideological noise. Four shifts are needed, but none of them matter unless Grandma never has to think about them: Metadata must be hidden. Tor like routing at the protocol level, so no relay ever sees both sender and receiver. Grandma just presses send. Identity must be decoupled from activity. Zero-knowledge proofs so reputation works without a permanent, linkable history. Grandma has a name, not a searchable public record. Payments must be indistinguishable. Lightning Network transactions currently leave a traceable path. We need confidential transaction protocols built directly into the payment layer, so the amount and destination are as opaque as a cash note. Grandma pays without leaving a financial footprint. The noise must be silenced. The protocol needs robust, default filtering that keeps out the constant barrage of crypto-hype, religious preaching and political rants. Grandma does not want to wade through ideology to send a message to her grandson. When grandma is shielded from all this, when the complexity of mixnets, ZKPs, confidential payments and key management is buried beneath an interface as simple as handing over a five pound note, and the feed is cleared of the ideological firehose, Nostr ceases to be a minefield and becomes genuine infrastructure. I think its even simpler: Many people just want the drama, the action, the hard emotions. The usual online culture is doing drama for the sake of drama (+attention, probably even more), than the argument itself.
