What Nostur tries to do is prevent other clients from completely wiping your follows (which is basically an epidemic) by comparing your latest saved follow list on the network with whatever it has stored locally. When it detects a difference, it prompts you to restore them, but it’s easy to accidentally restore a list that you didn’t want to if you made a lot of changes on another client first. There are other reasons why follow lists can get fragmented and become inconsistent across clients. What I did with Mutable is to let you snapshot a set of follows at any given time and back them up, so you can overwrite your list with the version you want. And if you didn’t manage to take a backup, it will just scrape the last one it can find from your relays before it was changed by another app.
