As I see it, the big pools face a real risk if they don’t signal. By playing it safe and only starting to signal once mandatory signaling begins, they gain an advantage over all the smaller pools.

That is true. I hope the forces that attacked the Bitcoin infrastructure, Core developers and Bitcoin itself couldn't reach miners in jurisdictions like China, Russia, Iran, and the clear economic incentives will work.
The media is captured. Many influencers are captured. Core devs are captured. Some node runners are brainwashed.
But many Bitcoin node runners are aware and running BIP-110 - about 20% of the network.
On X is heavily discussed. We have our discussions on Nostr.
I suspect this as well. "Sinflucing" is a Western phenomena.
We will win my friend. Either BIP-110 will be successful as a soft fork and fix Core v30+ vulnerabilities or it will be successful as a stand alone alternative of a captured Bitcoin. And we keep our stacks on both chains. If Bitcoin is captured and BIP-110 must go on its own, it will get momentum as it has the best Freedom Money DNA.
But lets first push the soft fork option. I hope we get it.
I am old. I just want to see the bridge @Jeff Booth talks about. If we hard fork, we are back to square 1. 2009 like. Then, I won't see it before I go. This is what terrifies me.
Everyone of us wants to see the Bitcoin Standard.
But BlackRock, Saylor and other forces are trying to capture Bitcoin so that exactly this is not achieved. That is why we see such heavy attack and exploits on Bitcoin infrastructure and Core.

Yes. If it turns out Bitcoin is captured BIP-110 will be a clear alternative but it will be much better to recapture Bitcoin and get BIP-110 activated as soft fork.
About the adoption ... you never know but US debt is at almost 40 Trillion and climbing fast. Global debts climbs fast. We see staggering global inlation. At some point the system will give ... but no one can say when ... my view is that its unsustainable but big system have big inertia
hedge
We can’t predict the time horizon, but ultimately, the most decentralized Bitcoin will win. Bitcoin as an invention is here to stay, and there is no way to enrich yourself by manipulating the protocol rules. The chain with the most economic value will be the one where nobody can steal from others.
