Aliester Crowley is great because although his ideas on WILL and relativism predate him, his life and works were an IRL practical experiment of the ideas ... once you are in on the "joke" it's easy to see the illusion of reality and cult of society for what it is

I get the appeal, but doesn't dismantling illusions just create new ones? what kept him sane?

Probably nothing.
He took too many drugs and likely did fucked up things, but you simply don't know what's true with him.
