I've finalized the specs for my new homelab server. I've decided to go for a converged infrastructure initially. So we have:-
AMD EPYC 7452 CPU (32 cores, 64 threads)
512GB of ECC RAM
2 x 10/25 gbps fibre cards
1 x GPU (TBC) for plex transcoding
2 x PCIe NVME cards (4 x 4TB Samsung 990 pro drives) for VM storage
15 x 20TB disks in raid z2 (~260 TB or so usable space)
LSI 16 drive HBA card
Most of the above has already arrived, just waiting on 5 of the disks.
The server will be running proxmox 9, with virtual truenas. To keep things stable and to ensure truenas gets access to disks for monitoring etc I'm going to be doing PCI passthrough of the LSI HBA and the 2 x PCI NVME cards. Additionally I'll be passing through one of the 10/25 gbps fibre cards to ensure that my storage has direct network access.
The virtual nas will provide the iSCSI/NFS/SMB storage out to the VM host and the rest of the network.
Once my last batch of HDDs arrives (~24 hours) I'll start the build. Going to document the process on nostr as we have a growing homelab interest based on messages I've received.
Anyway.. more to follow
