Tor is much more reliable than Lightning. Feather, the Monero client I use every day, uses Tor by default. I pipe 100% of my Internet through Tor via a Tor router. All my Bitcoin and Monero transactions occur over Tor. They never once fail incomprehensibly like LN payments do. Bitcoin’s market cap was seeded by early darknet operators, all of which used Tor. If Tor is “too unreliable” it is because Lightning is not robust enough as a protocol, and is prone to unreasonable failures under network conditions that are not the developer’s LAN. Probably approaching a billion people have network conditions worse than Tor in their daily lives and all the software they use still works.
