What is the definition if a swap?
lighting =>> on-chain and vice versa, all non-custodial
How is it different than open/close channel?

In all seriousness, these swaps are helpful when your lightning node has a lot of capacity and you’d like to move that on-chain, either to the node itself or to cold storage
Ability to move on-chain elsewhere is key
