The problem they would be solving is increased privacy in transactions and allowing offline P2P transactions of tether.
Usually ecash means you have to add a layer of trust however in the case of tether you are already trusting them so by removing a centralised blockchain from the mix you are actually decreasing the trust needed not increasing it.
