How can nostr apps help grow discoverability without leaning on the kinds of algorithms that manipulate legacy applications?

The answer is sharing. Let's say I know 50 people. And I engage with your post. Let's say I like / repost / follow / comment some of the people I know will see this and "the idea/post/info" gets discovered. When many many people give time and energy (share) this is how things grow exponentially. Think about it. This is the most powerful thing in the world. On the other side, you have things you don't agree or don't want others to see. how does this work without algorithm? What you do is you just completely ignore it. You know when a person does not have a kid. And when they die the genes stop. Its the same thing that happens when you do not engage with content. It will stop at you and not go on. If others do the same it will stop spreading. Even if you look at the #1 way to destroy a relationship. It is the same. Stonewalling (not interacting) is the #1 way to kill a relationship So in short. Give time and energy towards things you want to spread or get discovered. This means, talk about it, share, comment, like, etc. Then things you want to NOT get discovered. Completely ignore it. When others do the same it WILL NOT grow. Long text but simple consept. I know this works, because this is how the real life works, and has been working for thousands of years.
