Why store messages on relays and not locally? Availability I guess.. but won't it just spam relays with unnecessar data? Why not just use relays to find your messaging peer and get the messages from them directly?

Peer to peer is hard. Relays are only used for message delivery, and messages are stored and accessed in the local database. If one relay is spammed, just move to another, a group can have multiple relays connected simultaneously.
