I think the simplest reason is the answer.
Luke and mechanic are genuinely looking out for bitcoin and the core crowd are trying to make bitcoin different.
Why?
Two obvious conclusions

They might have good intentions, and curbing non-monetary uses is a great goal, but the execution is terrible, and this BIP would hurt bitcoin future if they had their way. Hurting by overprotecting... there was a pretty good video from Academy of Ideas about that theme 🤔
