We shouldn't interpret this word as literaly meaning, because he preaches the duty being free later. I know that there are people not like that in this world, being submissive, too deterministic, and too acceptance. Rather, as Arent wrote the importance that people have free will as learning WW2, I think we dare have the courage to be free.
