Last year I made the eager mistake of reading the Imitation of Christ straight through as if it were a novel. Much better to read a chapter a day while smoking a pipe.

Most spiritual books are like that. Best read slowly and prayerfully.
I've made the same misstep. I think I'll dig out my copy and start again. Thanks for the impetus.
Amen. I did a better job with the Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales but as it goes with devotionals, there’s always more to profit from a reread.
Praise God. I’ve found it best to quickly read the chapter straight through just to get the overarching point and then slowly contemplating and praying through each sentence on the second pass. Underlining and annotating also helps, as always. I pray you find it fruitful.
