sharing this because i think more people need to know what pax silica actually is — and what it could mean for us as filipinos. pax silica is a US-led coalition aimed at securing supply chains for AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals. the philippines joined, and the plan involves building a massive 4,000-acre economic security zone in new clark city, tarlac. the government says it means jobs and tech growth. and on the surface, that sounds great. but here's what critics are raising, and i think it's worth hearing: 🌿 environmental damage — the philippines sits on rich deposits of nickel and copper, exactly what this initiative needs. large-scale mining at this level risks destroying ecosystems, polluting waterways, and degrading mountains that communities depend on. ⚖️ economic inequality — there's a real concern that we end up doing the hard, low-value labor — digging up the raw materials — while partner countries keep the patents, the technology, and the majority of profits. we do the work. they take the gains. 🌾 farmers losing their land — 4,000 acres has to come from somewhere. farmers' groups are already protesting the loss of agricultural land and what it means for the communities living and working on it. 🌏 geopolitical risk — the coalition is designed to exclude china. critics warn this could escalate trade tensions and make strategic zones on philippine soil potential targets in larger conflicts we didn't start. the latest update: the philippines and the US are expected to finalize the pax silica framework as early as november. i'm not saying the initiative has zero merit. but decisions this big, with consequences this wide, deserve more public conversation than they're getting. especially from us, the people whose land, resources, and environment are on the line. talk about this. share this. this is bigger than tech. 🌱
