Originally established as a Jordanian border post, Tower 22 has been used by U.S. forces since 2015 as part of an “advise and assist” mission. The installation hosts American engineering, aviation, logistics and security personnel and sits just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Al-Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria. Together, Tower 22 and Al-Tanf form a critical logistics and surveillance network for U.S. operations in the tri-border region of Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Beyond serving as a troop outpost, Tower 22 has housed significant military infrastructure. By 2020, the base operated an AN/TPS-75 transportable 3D air-search radar capable of detecting and tracking aircraft and other aerial threats at long ranges. Its location makes it one of the most strategically valuable U.S. positions in the region, acting as both a forward operating site and a support hub for operations conducted from Al-Tanf.
