Social media is form dependent Nostr is a bit like twitter in that you can follow people you know irl, but mostly not Facebook is for the people you know but it’s so corrupted because “dumb fucks” isn’t just a thing he said when he was 19, it’s exactly how he views people Reddit is the “world’s discussion forum” but it’s censored to hell YouTube is the world’s video platform but it’s also censored to hell (is this due to google’s corporate culture?) and they can’t do copyright dmca properly I don’t dislike social media but I want it to actually fucking work

My feeling is when you control the entire stack in social media then you just crush everyone Zuck took early internet network effects, blocked competitor links, replaced people’s email addresses, did all kinds of other non consensual things, copied every product and now years later he’s still alienating his “community” by handing out easy bans (no not necessarily him personally but the product is garbage) and saying it’s official policy that it’s ok to call lgbt people mentally ill I really do want to take their side on _some_ things. But he’s just awful

Facebook finally gave us “encryption” on messenger It sounds great to normies. Great, privacy! But it’s Mark Zuckerberg, the same person who (among many other things) retracted his messages from everybody else’s inbox It’s also broken messenger completely He is a horrible person, and absolutely doesn’t care about you Facebook has been fucking around with privacy settings for years; what he’s doing is absolutely self serving

I enjoy Dreamwidth but it feels the engagement isn’t there Maybe the community around livejournal just had bigger numbers

I actually cannot believe the padded room universe YouTube wants us to live in Vids have been removed for years, demonetized for years, sometimes based on political ideology, sometimes their own brain dead policies (“not allowed to contradict WHO”) The word suicide is often censored and I guess they’ve been known to remove old war footage The recommendations are absolutely fucking terrible and asinine, not only often lowest common denominator but the same things you’ve seen and also just spread across so many subjects other than what you’re currently watching It is fucking wild, as someone who saw firsthand the first few years of YouTube (however that being said their copyright process went above and beyond what was required and they’ve also been politically motivated for quite a while; I believe they ended up effectively taking Scientology‘s side against anon) Google is either the world’s stupidest fuckass most incompetent company or they do these kinds of things on purpose (I remember sensitive footage from Waco getting removed right around the time Google bought YouTube, what if goog really is deep state?)
