🌍 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: BTC Shule 📍 Location: Burundi 🇧🇮 About: BTC Shule (“shule” means “school” in Kirundi and several other African languages) is a grassroots Bitcoin education and circular-economy project. The project was inspired by communities like Bitcoin Ekasi and Bitcoin Beach, and is building real everyday Bitcoin use in rural Burundi, starting in Winteko, and expanding through Gitega. The work is practical, not theoretical. BTC Shule teaches Bitcoin in Kirundi and French, runs village classes and city meetups, trains merchants to accept sats, and helps families earn, save, and spend Bitcoin locally. Key Objectives: 1. Build Bitcoin circular economies: Turn Winteko and later more Burundian communities into places where sats are earned, spent, and saved locally among families, farmers, shops, and services. 2. Expand practical Bitcoin education: Teach Bitcoin in Kirundi and French through village classes, university and professional training, Trezor Academy self-custody programs, BitDevs Gitega, and hands-on workshops for both children and adults. 3. Increase everyday Bitcoin usage: Onboard merchants, support Lightning and low-connectivity wallets, and make Bitcoin useful for real purchases. 4. Empower communities with financial knowledge: Give unbanked households tools for self-custody, savings, local trade, and inflation resistance, linking learning to income through sats rewards, gardens, and micro-enterprise. 5. Strengthen grassroots Bitcoin Adoption: Grow a homegrown Burundian Bitcoin culture with meetups, open-source tools, Kirundi resources, youth graduates, and a model other African villages can copy. A sender pays in Bitcoin over the Lightning Network; the recipient does not need a wallet, an exchange account, or any Bitcoin knowledge. The platform went live in early 2026 after founder built it in public through the usual hard parts of payments: webhooks, failed transactions, liquidity, and deployment. Key Objectives: 1. Make Lightning payments usable in daily life by settling Bitcoin invoices in seconds and converting them immediately into spendable local currency. 2. Bridge Bitcoin with mobile money and bank rails so recipients get paid the way they already receive money, especially MTN Mobile Money and bank accounts. 3. 📚 Readers’ Friday Book Club was a success! We discussed Chapter 14: “Centralizing Control” from Hijacking Bitcoin by Roger Ver and Steve Patterson. Here are our key takeaways: 1. Open source does not mean no influence. A few developers can still have a lot of influence over Bitcoin’s software. 2. Funding matters. We discussed who funds Bitcoin development and how funding can create incentives or conflicts of interest. 3. The blocksize debate was also about Bitcoin’s future. Different groups had different ideas about how Bitcoin should scale and what it should be used for. 4. Developers can affect what gets built. Changes to Bitcoin’s code can make some uses easier or harder. 5. Bitcoin has different groups with different roles.
