The latter does not have to be free of fees, but it must be free of third-party permission. Cashu doesn’t have this feature, and it’s good to know about it – if a mint shuts down its service or refuses to pay a Lightning invoice based on tokens for whatever reason, the user has no way to leave this “pseudo layer” without the mint’s cooperation.
