🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1974, the Queen single “Killer Queen” peaked on the UK Singles Chart at #2 (November 16) The Freddie Mercury-penned track featured on the LP “Sheer Heart Attack”. Brian May summed it up, saying: “‘Killer Queen' was the turning point. It was the song that best summed up our kind of music, and a big hit, and we desperately needed it as a mark of something successful happening for us... I was always very happy with this song…….I still enjoy listening to it because there's a lot to listen to, but it never gets cluttered. There's always space for all the little ideas to come through. And of course, I like the solo, with that three-part section, where each part has its own voice...It's vintage Queen.” “Killer Queen” was the single that broke the band in the US and internationally, peaking at #2 in Ireland and the UK, #3 in the Netherlands, #4 in Belgium and Norway, #10 in France and Austria, #12 in the US and Germany, #15 in Canada, and #24 in Australia. Katy Perry cites "Killer Queen" as an important influence on her, saying it "made me discover music and helped me come into my own at the age of 15". #Queen, #sheerheartattack, #rockmusic, #FreddieMercury, #brianmay, #rogertaylor, #johndeacon, #classicalbum, #70smusic, #killerqueen, #freddie, #dailyrockhistory, #70srock, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday, #thisdayinrock "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image "Before there was Photoshop, there was Philippe,” says Irene Halsman of her father, Philippe Halsman. One of the luminaries of Halsman’s inventive portrait photography was Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. Beginning in 1941, Halsman and Dalí spent 37 years collaborating and experimenting, resulting in thousands of images, including the 1948 Dalí Atomicus, presented by Magnum Gallery at this year’s Paris Photo Fair. After 26 takes and six hours, the pair achieved the technical feat, chosen by TIME magazine as one of the most influential photographs of all time. Concocting endless scenarios in Halsman’s New York studio, the duo’s avant-garde ideas would come to life, as in their series exploring the many personas of Dalí’s mustache. “They were like two schoolboys collaborating, trying to shock the public”, Irene adds. Dalí Atomicus, the second image in this post, is showcased as a vintage gelatin silver print, printed by Halsman himself, on view at Magnum Gallery’s booth C02 at the Grand Palais until November 16. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE I’m heading down the Atlanta Highway... This week in 1989, the B-52’s single “Love Shack” peaked on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #3 (November 18) After the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson in 1985, the band went into a self imposed hiatus, but came together in 1988 to write the songs for the album “Cosmic Thing”, which Cindy Wilson described as a healing process for herself and the band. “Love Shack” was one of the songs written by the band for the “Cosmic Thing” LP, and proved to be the B-52’s most commercially successful single, topping the charts in Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart, #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (becoming their first Top 40 hit), and #5 on the Canada. Rolling Stone named "Love Shack" the best single of 1989 and ranked it 246th on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song was also named one of the 365 Songs of the Century in 2001. In the 1970s Kate Pierson lived in an old cabin with a tin roof located off the Atlanta Highway near Athens, Georgia, where the band conceived "Rock Lobster", amongst other songs. It burned down in December 2004. It was the inspiration for the song, along with a real club outside of Athens, Georgia, called the Hawaiian Ha-Le, where they would hang out. The video, featuring a cameo from a pre-fame RuPaul in his first mainstream appearance, won the award for Best Group Video at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1977, the Van Morrison single “Moondance” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #92 (November 19) Morrison did not release the jazzy swing-style track with the killer sax in the US as a single until September 1977, seven and a half years after the album of the same name on which it first appeared was released. The song debuted on the charts two months later, peaking at #92. "Moondance" was written and developed while Morrison was living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He recalled, “With 'Moondance' I wrote the melody first. I played the melody on a soprano sax and I knew I had a song so I wrote lyrics to go with the melody. That's the way I wrote that one. I don't really have any words to particularly describe the song, sophisticated is probably the word I'm looking for. For me, 'Moondance' is a sophisticated song. Frank Sinatra wouldn't be out of place singing that." It went on to be an all-time classic… "Moondance" was listed as #226 in Rolling Stone magazine's December 2004 feature "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". It’s also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In 1999, the 1970 release of the song by Van Morrison on Warner Bros. Records was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Imagine soaring through the skies for 23 days straight—never landing, never touching the ground. In 1930, brothers John and Kenneth Hunter did exactly that, rewriting aviation history with a jaw-dropping 553-hour, 41-minute nonstop flight in their Stinson Detroiter. Their mission? To prove that human endurance and aerial innovation could conquer the skies—and they succeeded with flair. Their secret weapon was mid-air refueling—an astonishing feat at the time. Like a high-stakes aerial ballet, another plane would fly alongside them, transferring fuel and supplies. Sometimes, one of the brothers had to climb out onto the wing or engine mount mid-flight, harnessed but exposed, to fix mechanical issues by hand. No autopilot. No safety net. Just raw courage and mechanical grit. They flew 37,000 miles in endless loops around Chicago, braving storms, fatigue, and the constant threat of failure. But they never wavered. Their record-breaking flight wasn't just about stamina—it was a bold statement about the future of aviation, sparking global fascination and pushing the limits of what was possible in the golden age of flight. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE This week in 1983, the Michael Jackson single “Thriller” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #24 (November 19) The song from the smash hit LP of the same name (which was Michael Jackson’s first US #1 album) reached #4 in the US, and #1 in Belgium, France and Spain as well as the top 10 in many other countries. It’s often cited as a pop culture phenomenon and a Halloween anthem. The video directed by John Landis featured Jackson, former Playboy model Ola Ray as his girlfriend, and was narrated by horror film legend Vincent Price. At 14 minutes in length, the video featuring many classic horror movie themes, and iconic choreographed dancing zombies, was a game-changer in music video history, revolutionizing the industry. At the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards, Thriller won the awards for Viewers Choice, Best Overall Performance and Best Choreography, and was nominated for Best Concept Video, Best Male Video and Video of the Year. Michael Jackson's Thriller was named the "greatest video" by MTV in 1999, and by VH1 and Time in 2001. In 2009, it became the first music video to be selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE This week in 1978, the Rod Stewart single “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #14 (November 18) This was a pretty controversial song, for a number of reasons. Even Rod himself confessed: "If I ever wrote a song which put a fly in the ointment or a spanner in the works - it's this one!” Firstly, the disco-style song grated on some critics, and many of Rockin’ Rod’s fan base from his Faces and Jeff Beck Group days. But in a 2007 interview, co-writer Duane Hitchings noted that "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" was actually "a spoof on guys from the 'cocaine lounge lizards' of the Saturday Night Fever days. We Rock and Roll guys thought we were dead meat when that movie and the Bee Gees came out. The Bee Gees were brilliant musicians and really nice people. No big egos. Rod, in his brilliance, decided to do a spoof on disco. VERY smart man. There is no such thing as a 'dumb' super success in the music business." The song from the “Blondes Have More Fun” LP was written by Stewart, Carmine Appice and Hitchings, although Stewart admitted in his 2012 autobiography to "unconscious plagiarism" of the Jorge Ben Jor song "Taj Mahal", which he had heard while attending the Rio Carnival in 1978. He also admitted that he had consciously lifted the song's signature synthesizer riff from the string arrangement on Bobby Womack's "(If You Want My Love) Put Something Down On It". When Jorge Ben Jor filed a copyright infringement lawsuit, Stewart agreed to give proceeds from the song to UNICEF. Furthermore, guitarist Jim Cregan claimed that the song was "inspired in part" by The Rolling Stones' "Miss You". Ian McLagan, who played electric piano on "Miss You" and has also played with Stewart, claimed that "It's a rip-off of 'Miss You'". Drummer Carmine Appice told Songfacts: "We were in the studio and 'Miss You' by The Rolling Stones was a big hit. Rod was always a guy that used to listen to what was going on around him. He was always looking at the charts and listening. He was a big fan of The Rolling Stones, so when they came out with "Miss You," disco was really big at the time, so he wanted to do some kind of disco-y song, something like 'Miss You,' nothing like Gloria Gaynor.” Stewart said: “It was frightening, stirring up so much love and hate at the same time: most of the public loved it; all of the critics hated it. I can understand both positions." Appice noted: “It came out and went to #1 everywhere." “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” certainly was a worldwide smash hit, going all the way to #1 the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Portugal and Spain, #2 in Argentina, France, New Zealand and Norway, #3 in Belgium, #5 in Ireland, #6 in the Netherlands, #8 in Austria and Switzerland, #9 in Germany and Finland, #11 in Sweden, and #12 in Japan. Rolling Stone ranked the song #308 in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Fun fact: the female lead in the video is the Norwegian model Lillian Muller, who was Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1976. She later appeared as "Miss Chemistry" in Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher” video clip. #rodstewart, #DaYaThinkImSexy, #disco, #70smusic, #blondeshavemorefun, #carmineappice, #RockinRod, #number1, #numberone, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Sebastião Salgado’s Serra Pelada series, photographed in 1986, stands as one of the most iconic and harrowing visual documents of human labor in modern history. Shot in stark black and white, these images capture the overwhelming scale of the Brazilian gold mine, where thousands of men, covered in mud, sweat, and exhaustion, climbed makeshift ladders carved into the cliffs, carrying sacks of earth on their backs in the hope of finding gold. Salgado’s elevated vantage points reveal an almost surreal landscape: a human anthill, an immense choreography of bodies moving in unison, driven by desperation and dreams of fortune. Up close, the portraits tell another story, faces marked by fatigue, pride, resilience, and the brutal reality of survival. Every frame speaks of the physical intensity of the labor, the dangerous conditions, and the collective struggle of men suspended between hope and hardship. image This series is not only a masterpiece of documentary photography, but also a universal reflection on inequality, ambition, and the human cost behind natural resources. #sebastiaosalgado #serrapelada #documentaryphotography #humancondition #photojournalism #iconicphotography #blackandwhitephoto #bwmasters #reportagephotography #brazilhistory #goldmine #visualstorytelling #magnumphotos #socialdocumentary #powerfulimages #humanstruggle #photographyhistory #rawhumanity #photographicart "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
