Queen do it live:
On this day in 1981, the Queen & David Bowie single “Under Pressure” went to #1 on the UK Singles Chart (November 21)
Legend has it that long before they were massively famous, Freddie Mercury sold David Bowie a pair of boots, when he had his Kensington Markets stall.
Many years down the track, Bowie and Queen met up by chance in the studio, had a few drinks, and decided to write a song together.
“Under Pressure” is the fantastic result of that collaboration.
Queen was at at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, working on their 1982 album Hot Space, while David Bowie was also at Mountain recording his vocals for "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)", the title song for the 1982 horror film of the same name.
Everyone contributed to the song, but Freddie was the song's primary musical songwriter, and Brian May recalled to Mojo magazine in October 2008 that “David took over the song lyrically.”
It also produced one of the most memorable, recognizable and iconic bass riffs of all time, which was later stolen by Vanilla Ice for his “Ice Ice Baby” hit (for which Bowie and Queen later received songwriting credit).
Interestingly, the riff was almost lost, according to Roger Taylor in the “Days of our Lives” documentary.
The story goes that Queen bass player John Deacon came up with the riff, but then the band went for pizza before coming back to continue rehearsals.
Upon returning, Deacon had completely forgotten his idea!
Luckily, Taylor eventually remembered how it went…
The timeless track with the timeless message has been critically acclaimed as one of both Queen and Bowie's best songs, with some even considering it one of the greatest songs of all time.
“Under Pressure" was listed at #31 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s, and voted the second best collaboration of all time in a poll by Rolling Stone magazine.
In 2021 it was ranked #429 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Marine fossils found in what is now Iowa might seem surprising, but when these creatures lived 358.86 to 323.4 million years ago, nearly all of what is now the Northern Hemisphere was underwater.
This specimen shows a number of crinoids, which are related to starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers.
Known as sea lilies for their beautiful, feathered arms, they grew in dense groups they created a protected, diverse ecosystem for other creatures to call home.
The invertebrates feed by catching drifting particles in their many arms. In a forest full of crinoids, competition for food was tough, so they evolved a variety of stalk heights which enabled them to capture food at different levels above the seafloor.

Sifu Lee’s reputation as one of the greatest martial artists in history was not only built on his speed and philosophy but also on the physical conditioning he put his body through.
One of his most famous training practices was iron fist conditioning, a method rooted in traditional Chinese martial arts. By repeatedly striking hard surfaces such as sand, gravel, and wooden posts, Lee gradually toughened the bones, muscles, and skin of his hands.
Over time, this process created visible calluses and enlarged knuckles, which allowed him to deliver devastating strikes without injuring himself. This training was not about brute force alone. She continued to gain praise for playing a 17th-century servant in Girl with a Pearl Earring(2003), a troubled teenager in A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004) and a struggling actress in Match Point (2005).
The lattermost marked her first collaboration with Woody Allen, who later directed her in Scoop (2006) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). Her other works of this period include The Prestige (2006) and the albums Anywhere I Lay My Head (2008) and Break Up (2009), both of which charted on the Billboard 200.
In 2010, Johansson debuted on Broadway in a revival of A View from the Bridge, which won her the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play, and began portraying Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universefilm Iron Man 2. She reprised the role in eight films, leading up to her solo feature Black Widow (2021), gaining global stardom.
