“Space Oddity” live:
This week in 1972, the David Bowie LP “Space Oddity” debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #31 (November 25)
For a 1967 promotional film, Bowie wrote a new song, titled "Space Oddity", a tale about a fictional astronaut called Major Tom.
The song earned Bowie a contract with Mercury Records, who agreed to finance production of a new album.
Unfortunately to a lack of promotion, this second “David Bowie” album was also a commercial failure, despite earning some positive reviews from music critics.
Despite Bowie being named 1969's Best Newcomer in a readers' poll for Music Now! and "Space Oddity" being named record of the year by Penny Valentine of Disc and Music Echo, David Bowie barely sold over 5,000 copies by March 1970.
Following this 1972 reissue with RCA however, the album finally managed to chart, peaking at #21 in Australia, and #17 on the UK Albums Chart, remaining on the chart for 42 weeks.
Early in 1973, the album peaked at #8 in Spain, #13 in Canada, and #16 on the US Billboard chart, remaining on the chart for 36 weeks.
“Space Oddity” of course went on to be an enduring classic, and was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll".

A cross-section of England’s iconic A303 road reveals how this route has evolved over thousands of years.
Once a prehistoric trackway dating back to around 3000 BC, it later became part of the Roman Fosse Way before transforming into a major coaching road in the 19th century.
By 1933, it was officially designated as the A303, connecting Basingstoke to Honiton through five counties.

In Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, British archaeologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon become the first souls to enter King Tutankhamen’s tomb in more than 3,000 years.
Tutankhamen’s sealed burial chambers were miraculously intact, and inside was a collection of several thousand priceless objects, including a gold coffin containing the mummy of the teenage king.
When Carter first arrived in Egypt, in 1891, most of the ancient Egyptian tombs had been discovered, and the majority of these had been hopelessly plundered by tomb raiders over the millennia.
However, Carter was a brilliant excavator, and in the first years of the 20th century he discovered the tombs of Queen Hatshepsut and King Thutmose IV.
Around 1907, he became associated with the Earl of Carnarvon, a collector of antiquities who commissioned Carter to supervise excavations in the Valley of the Kings.
By 1913, most experts felt there was nothing in the Valley left to be uncovered.
Carter, however, persisted in his efforts, convinced that the tomb of the little-known King Tutankhamen might still be found.
