On this day in 1981, the J. Geils Band single “Centerfold” debuted on the Australian charts at #98 (December 28)
“Centerfold” was written by the band's keyboard player Seth Justman, who wrote or co-wrote all the tracks on the “Freeze Frame” LP.
Songfacts reports that Justman claimed that the reason you didn't hear much synthesizer on earlier J. Geils albums is because they couldn't afford them: The band was trapped in the record company debt cycle, constantly owing money despite their success.
The former blues-based rockers really latched onto the new wave sound with this one…
Despite releasing their debut studio LP way back in 1970, the J. Geils band had never cracked the Top 10 with a single anywhere in the world before.
Now they had what was to be their biggest hit, staying in the #1 spot in the US for a massive six weeks, earning them a spot touring with The Rolling Stones, the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and heavy rotation on the new cable network MTV.
The song from the “Freeze Frame” LP went to #1 in the US, Australia, and Canada, and was a Top 5 song in the UK, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, and South Africa.
In 2018, it was ranked at #66 on Billboard's All Time Top Songs.
The video directed by Paul Justman, brother of the song's writer Seth, became an MTV favourite, and allegedly the school girls in the clip were students at a Dance Academy above the recording studio, who were asked to be in the video at the last minute…

10 lessons from George Orwell’s 1984
1. On Controlling Truth
“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
→ Lesson: Control over history is control over destiny.
2. On Surveillance
“Big Brother is watching you.”
→ Lesson: Constant surveillance crushes freedom and breeds self-censorship.
3. On Language and Thought
“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?”
→ Lesson: Limit language, and you limit imagination and dissent.
4. On Propaganda
“War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.”
→ Lesson: Repetition of contradictions can make lies feel like truth.
5. On Fear and Control
“In the face of pain there are no heroes.”
→ Lesson: Fear can break even the strongest spirit.
6. On Reality
“Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else.”
→ Lesson: When minds are manipulated, reality itself is altered.
7. On Conformity
“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”
→ Lesson: Blind conformity ensures perpetual oppression.
8. On Power
“The object of power is power.”
→ Lesson: Totalitarian regimes seek power for its own sake, not for the people.
9. On Memory and Truth
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
→ Lesson: When truth is denied, obedience replaces reality.
10. On Resistance
“Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.”
→ Lesson: Awareness and action must awaken together for real change.

In August 2006, "Livin' Thing" was named by the UK's Q as the #1 "Guilty Pleasure" single of all time – a list designed to celebrate "uncool" but excellent records…
Songfacts tells us that Suzi Quatro’s sister Patti, Brie Brandt, and Addie Lee, who were all one time members of the female rock group Fanny, all feature uncredited on backup vocals.
According to Suzi Quatro's autobiography the trio sang the "higher and higher" parts.

Wooden bath clogs. AKA 'nalın' or 'qabqab'.
Their Arabic name, 'qabqab', derives from the clacking noise they made on the marble floors. From Turkey.
They are inlaid with pewter and mother-of-pearl. The leather straps are covered in gold-embroidered velvet.
At 26cm high they lifted the wearer above the wet and dirty floor, but a personal attendant was needed for support.

On this day in 1980, the Dire Straits single “Tunnel of Love” debuted on the Australian charts at #90 (December 29)
Along with “Skateaway” and “Expresso Love”, “Tunnel of Love” is one of the epic songs from the classic Dire Straits LP “Making Movies”, and a live concert favourite with diehard fans.
It is one of only three Dire Straits songs not credited to Mark Knopfler alone (the other two are "Money for Nothing" and "What's The Matter Baby?").
The song itself is entirely by Knopfler, but the opening instrumental is an arrangement of the "Carousel Waltz" from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Carousel”.
The song was also featured in the 1982 Richard Gere film “An Officer and a Gentleman” and was included in the film’s accompanying soundtrack album.

On this day in 1985, the Aha single “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #39 (December 28)
The song from their debut studio album “Hunting High and Low”, written by guitarist Pål Waaktaar,-Savoy, was not as popular in some commercial markets as their debut single "Take On Me", which had achieved the top spot in the United States and several other countries around the world, but in the UK and Ireland it improved upon the #2 charting of "Take On Me", reaching #1 on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in January 1986.
It also peaked at #2 in Norway, Denmark and Sweden, #4 in the Netherlands, #5 in Germany, Finland and Belgium, #7 in Switzerland, #8 in Belgium and South Africa, #9 in Italy, #10 in France, #11 in Canada, #12 in New Zealand, #19 in Australia, and #20 in the US.
Waaktaar-Savoy recalled the difficulties the Norwegian combo had getting the song done:
“When we recorded it, we were really sick with influenza.
[keyboard player] Magne and [lead singer] Morten were lying in the studio on camping beds with high fevers.”
U2 admitted that "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." heavily influenced the composition of their 2000 single release, "Beautiful Day", and Bono paid tribute to it by combining the two songs together at a concert in Oslo, Norway, in 2005.

🏰The castle, which had been built on alluvial deposits of the river Rhine (hence the term haar "sandy hill"). Its origins probably date back to the 13th century.
At the time, the building was owned by the Van de Haar family. In 1449, after the death of Josyna van de Haar, who had married Dirk van Zuylen, the castle became the property of the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family.
The building was destroyed in 1482 during the struggles between the bishop and the city of Utrecht and later rebuilt.
In 1890, the castle, of which only ruins existed, was inherited by Étienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt, who had married three years earlier to the French baroness Hélène Carline Betsy de Rothschild, of the banking family of the same name.
The new owner couple decided to reconstruct the building, entrusting the project to the famous architect Pierre Cuypers: the reconstruction lasted twenty years, from 1892 to 1912.
It was a reconstruction work without equal in Europe. In 2000, the castle was donated to the foundation "Kasteel de Haar. Between 2001 and 2010, the building and the surrounding gardens underwent a major restoration.
