-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
THE DOOMSDAY DJ:
TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE
On this day in 1984, the Pat Benatar single โLove Is A Battlefieldโ debuted on the UK, Singles Chart at #77 (January 14)
โLove Is A Battlefieldโ was written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman, who also combined to write โThe Bestโ, which was a hit for Tina Turner, and again in Australia for Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes.
Songwriting Hall of Famer Knight also co-wrote Scandalโs โThe Warriorโ, while Chapman is half of the Chinn/Chapman songwriting team that wrote a plethora of hits for artists around the world.
The song from the โLive from Earthโ LP was a beauty, spending 5 weeks at #1 in Australia, and 4 weeks at #1 in the Netherlands, making it one of the biggest selling songs of the year in those countries.
It also went to #2 in Canada, #3 in Germany, #5 in the US (tied with "We Belong" as her highest-charting single there), #6 in New Zealand, #9 in Ireland, #11 in Switzerland, and #49 in the UK.
In 1984, the song won Benatar her fourth consecutive Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, and the video was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video.
โLove is a Battlefieldโ was ranked at #30 in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980sโฆ
The MTV favourite was one of the first clips to feature dialogue not involved in the actual song, and struck a chord with teenagers everywhere as Benatar plays the girl whoโs had enough and runs away from home (even though she was 30 in real life at the time!)

On this day in 1984, the Huey Lewis & The News single โI Want a New Drugโ debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #68
(January 14)
The second single from their smash hit album โSportsโ was written by Huey Lewis allegedly in only a few minutes.
Huey explained in the book Playing Back The '80s: A Decade Of Unstoppable Hits that "I Want A New Drug" came to him, understandably, in the midst of a hangover. "I had a long night, shall we say. I woke up and I had an early appointment with Bob Gordon, my then-publishing attorney, at like nine in the morning.
I got up and I remember I had a headache. I drove to his place and I had the idea on the way.
I walked in and I said, 'Bob, do you have a pen and pencil?' I wrote down most of the song."
He said in a Rolling Stone interview: "The whole meaning of 'I Want a New Drug' is that drugs aren't a part of life. They're just superficial. They're nothing about life.
Life is love.
Love is the answer, man."
Think youโve heard that extremely familiar 80s riff somewhere else?
Well, when the theme song of the 1984 film โGhostbustersโ was released, Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr. and Columbia Pictures for copyright infringement, claiming that Parker had stolen the melody from "I Want a New Drug".
The three parties settled out of court.
Details of the settlement (specifically, that Columbia paid Lewis a settlement) were confidential until 2001, when Lewis commented on the payment in an episode of VH1's Behind the Music.
Parker subsequently sued Lewis for breaching confidentiality.
Hueyโs tune went to #6 in the US and Canada, #10 in New Zealand, and #27 in Australia and Germany.

Here's the 1988 Santarsiero Atlantis Roadster.

The Roman ship named De Meern 1 was discovered in Veldhuizen, The Netherlands, in 1997. At the beginning the ship was left alone in the ground to preserve it but in 2003 it was decided to dig it up to prevent it from decaying because of the ground water.
The ship lies exactly on the border of the Roman empire and Germania and dates back to around 200 AD. The ship is 25 meters long and made from oak trees that grew in the Netherlands.
The oak trees were felled around 148 AD. Evidence suggests that the ship wasn't sunk in battle against the Germanics but sunk by accident.

The Rotary Club of Boracay Island is leading the Reef Dome Environmental Restoration Project, a dedicated effort to restore the island's damaged marine ecosystem. This sustainable initiative deploys specially designed artificial reefs to rehabilitate critical habitats, support marine biodiversity, and promote responsible tourism.
The project centers on constructing and installing concrete reef domesโeach measuring approximately five feet in diameter and three feet in height. Their unique dome structure features strategically placed small openings, providing essential shelter for juvenile fish and fry from predators.
These reef domes are strategically placed in areas where natural coral reefs have been severely degraded by:
โ Excessive tourism activity
โ Physical damage from boat anchors
โ Destructive and unsustainable fishing practices
By creating new habitats in these zones, the project actively restores marine life without disturbing the island's remaining healthy reefs. This targeted approach ensures a tangible, positive impact on Boracay's underwater environment for generations to come.

On this day in 1984, the U2 single โI Will Followโ debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #90 (January 14)
"I Will Follow" was originally released in October 1980, had a second single release as a live version in the Netherlands and Germany in 1982, and this third release in the United States in 1983/84 taken from the โUnder a Blood Red Skyโ album.
The original peaked at #34 in New Zealand and #71 in Australia, but failed to chart elsewhere, the 1982 release peaked at #12 in the Netherlands, and this one only reached #81 in the US.
Bono wrote the lyrics to "I Will Follow" in tribute to his mother, who passed away when he was 14 years old, and are about the unconditional love a mother has for her child.
Itโs the only song that U2 have performed on every tour since they released their first album.
"I Will Follow" was written three weeks before U2 began recording โBoyโ.
The song has that raw, earnest aggression that many lament went missing from U2โs music as they progressed through the years and became more polished.
During early rehearsals, as Bono was struggling to convey the aggression for the guitar riff that he was envisioning, he took the Edge's guitar from him and "hammer[ed] away" on the two-stringed chord the Edge had created to show his bandmates the urgency he wanted.
Bono said, "It was literally coming out of a kind of rage, the sound of a nail being hammered into your frontal lobe".

Imagine seeing the world as it truly is, not through the worn grooves of habit and expectation, but with every detail alive, immediate, and unfiltered.
In "The Doors of Perception", Aldous Huxley invites us to such a vision. He examines how the brain acts as a gatekeeper, compressing the flood of sensory information into a form manageable for survival.
Ordinary perception, necessary though it is, leaves much of the richness of reality unseen.
Children, with their wide-eyed wonder, glimpse what adults have learned to ignore, and Huxley sought to recover that clarity, through artistic skill and also but by opening his mind to experience the world as a mystic might.
Huxleyโs account of his mescalin experiment illustrates what happens when the usual filters loosen. Colors deepen, patterns reveal themselves, and the sense of self softens in the face of overwhelming perception.
The individual becomes less important, less self-contained, and more attuned to the sweep of life itself.
He explores the concept of โMind at Largeโ; the idea that each of us has the potential to perceive far more than our nervous system typically allows, but that the brainโs natural role is to protect us from being drowned in irrelevant or overwhelming stimuli.
Substances like mescalin, or naturally occurring chemicals such as adrenochrome, temporarily adjust this valve, giving us a glimpse of a fuller, more immediate reality.
Yet Huxleyโs essay is not merely a psychedelic adventure; it is a meditation on the boundaries of consciousness, the tension between the practical demands of life and the pursuit of perception untrammeled.
In loosening the constraints of the mind, he finds freedom from the trivial concerns and self-importance that occupy daily existence. At the same time, he reminds us that functioning in society requires the brainโs selective focus.
The adventure into expanded perception is a rare and deliberate opening, a fleeting chance to step beyond the ordinary and feel what is ordinarily hidden.
"The Doors of Perception" remains a slim but profound work, bridging science, philosophy, and personal experience.
It invites us to reconsider the nature of reality, to question how much of the world we actually perceive, and to marvel at the potential of consciousness itself.

On this day in 1968, the Cream single โSunshine of Your Loveโ debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #74 (January 13)
The lyric was written by Pete Brown, a beat poet who was friends with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. He also wrote lyrics for "I Feel Free" and "White Room."
Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce wrote the music.
Cream bass player and vocalist Jack Bruce is said to have based it on a distinctive bass riff he developed after being inspired by attending a Jimi Hendrix concert.
Hendrix actually covered the song at some of his shows, unaware that he was the inspiration for the bass line.
Hendrix engineer and producer Eddie Kramer recalled to Toronto's The Globe and Mail:
โJimi loved Cream, he loved Eric Clapton.
It was a fabulous song, he loved to play it, and he would just rip into it whenever the mood hit him."
Pete Brown wrote the opening line after being up all night working with Bruce and watching the sun come up.
In a Songfacts interview, he told the tale:
โWe had been working all night and had gotten some stuff done.
We had very little time to write for Cream, but we happened to have some spare time and Jack came up with the riff.
He was playing a stand-up - he still had his stand-up bass, because he'd been a jazz musician. He was playing stand-up bass, and he said, 'What about this then?' and played the famous riff.
I looked out the window and wrote down, 'It's getting near dawn.' That's how it happened. It's actually all true, really, all real stuff."
The song which would become a legendary Cream classic peaked at #5 in the US, #3 in Canada, #17 in the Netherlands, #22 in Australia, and #25 in the UK.
According to Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 songs issue, Jack Bruce knew the song would do well. "Both Booker T. Jones and Otis Redding heard it at Atlantic Studios and told me it was going to be a smash," he recalled.
In 2004 โSunshine of Your Loveโ ranked #65 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and is on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll".

Elvis Presley on his 1964 Harley-Davidson Duo Glide motorcycle.
Elvis Presley's 1964 Harley-Davidson Duo-Glide was a powerful Panhead-powered touring bike, a favorite for its classic style and raw power before the electric-start Electra-Glide took over, representing his love for freedom and rebellion, often seen with him in Memphis and even in his film Roustabout, embodying the cool, adventurous spirit of rock and roll, a machine he personalized and rode for simple joy.
Elvis Presley owned several Harley-Davidsons, including iconic Panhead models like the FLH Duo-Glide, particularly a 1958 model and a 1964 model, known for their distinct swingarm suspension and often seen in photos with him, including iconic shots with Priscilla Presley and at recording studios, showcasing his love for freedom and these powerful bikes that bridged the Hydra-Glide and early Electra-Glide eras.

The Qutub Minar is a towering stone minaret located in Delhi, India, and forms the central monument of the Qutub Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Construction began in 1199 CE under Qutb al-Din Aibak and was continued by his successors, making it one of the earliest monumental structures of Indo-Islamic architecture in the Indian subcontinent.
Rising to a height of approximately 73 metres, 214.5 ft, the minar is built from red sandstone and marble, with five distinct storeys marked by projecting balconies.
Its surface is richly decorated with bands of Quranic inscriptions, geometric patterns, and fluted shafts that alternate between circular and angular forms.
The Qutub Minar functioned both as a victory tower and as a minaret for the adjacent mosque, symbolising the establishment of new political and religious authority through monumental scale and refined craftsmanship...

The Prince by Niccolรฒ Machiavelli is a political treatise written in the 16th century. It is a guide for rulers on how to acquire and maintain power.
Machiavelli argues that it is better for a ruler to be feared than loved, and that rulers should be willing to use violence and deceit to achieve their goals. He also argues that rulers should not be bound by morality or ethics when it comes to making decisions about the state.
The Prince is a controversial work, but it has been highly influential throughout history. It has been read and studied by rulers and politicians all over the world.
Here is a summary of the key ideas in The Prince:
โข It is better for a ruler to be feared than loved.
โข Rulers should be willing to use violence and deceit to achieve their goals.
โข Rulers should not be bound by morality or ethics when it comes to making decisions about the state.
โข Rulers should create a strong military and be prepared to use it to defend their state.
โข Rulers should build up their treasury so that they have the resources to support their military and government.
โข Rulers should have a clear understanding of the different types of states and the best ways to govern them.
โข Rulers should be flexible and adaptable in order to respond to changing circumstances.
Machiavelli's ideas have been criticized by some for being immoral and cynical. However, others argue that Machiavelli was simply being realistic about the nature of politics. He believed that it is better for a ruler to be feared than loved because it will make them less likely to be overthrown. He also believed that rulers should be willing to use violence and deceit if necessary to protect their state.
The Prince is a complex and challenging work, but it is also a deeply rewarding one. It is a book that provides insights into the human nature and the nature of power.
Here are some of the key takeaways from the book:
โข Power is a double-edged sword. It can be used for good or for evil.
โข Rulers must be willing to make difficult choices in order to protect their state.
โข It is important to understand the different types of states and the best ways to govern them.
โข Rulers must be flexible and adaptable in order to respond to changing circumstances.

This week in 1984, Eurythmics single โHere Comes the Rain Againโ was released (January 12)
The opening track from the duoโs third studio album โTouchโ was written by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, and became Eurythmics' second Top 10 US hit, peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
โHere Comes the Rain Again" hit #8 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming their fifth consecutive Top 10 single in their home country, and also went to #4 in the Netherlands, #8 in Canada and Ireland, #10 in Norway, #15 in Belgium, and #16 in Australia.
Stewart also said he and Lennox wrote the song while staying at the Mayflower Hotel in New York City.
It was an overcast day, and Stewart was playing "melancholy A minor-ish chords with the B note in it" on his Casio keyboard.
Lennox came over, looked out the window at the gray skies and the New York skyline, and spontaneously sang, "Here comes the rain again".
The duo worked out the rest of the song based on that mood.
Worked out pretty well!
