Cranberries singer, songwriter, and musician Dolores O’Riordan passed away on this day in 2018 (January 15)
O'Riordan had one of the most distinctive voices in rock. She was known for her lilting mezzo-soprano voice, signature yodel, emphasized use of keening, and strong Limerick accent.
It was emotive, melancholy, earnest, plaintive, vulnerable, powerful, and unforgettable.
Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan recalled when she first met the band:
“I remember she was shy, very soft-spoken. Not the Dolores that everyone grew to know!
And she comes in and we're just kind of a gang of young guys sitting around the place. It must have been very, very intimidating for her".
O'Riordan sang a couple of songs that she had written and she also did a Sinéad O'Connor song, "Troy".
The band was impressed and gave her a cassette with instrumentals, asking her if she could work on it.
When she returned with a rough version of "Linger", she was hired.
Hogan told Rolling Stone that "the minute she sang, you know, it was like your jaw drops at her voice.
Dolores was musically far superior to me, because she had been doing it all her life".
O'Riordan was still a student at Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ secondary school when she first joined the band.
She went on to write and sing some much-loved and enduring songs with the Cranberries that were very much a part of the soundtrack to the era, and also released two albums as a solo performer.
She was also seen as a bit of an alternative style icon, with The New York Times mentioning that O'Riordan was responsible for a large portion of Dr. Martens boots sales in the 1990s.
Sadly, Dolores O’Riordan passed away by drowning due to alcohol intoxication in January 2018, aged just 46.
Her last public performance was on 14 December 2017 in New York City, where she sang three Cranberries songs at Billboard's Christmas party.
Following news of O'Riordan's death, fellow Irish rock legends U2 described O'Riordan's music, and vocal style by these words: "out of the West came this storm of a voice—she had such strength of conviction, yet she could speak to the fragility in all of us".
In 2018 she was named "The Top Female Artist of All Time" on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart.

When the first frost hits the Korean peninsula, the culinary calendar shifts to Gimjang—the massive communal effort to prepare enough fermented vegetables to survive the harsh winter. While summer kimchi is often light and quick-to-eat, winter varieties are engineered for longevity and deep complexity.
The star ingredients go far beyond simple Napa cabbage. This is the prime season for the Korean Radish (Mu), which becomes exceptionally sweet and firm in freezing temperatures. Unlike summer radishes which can be soft, winter Mu is often fermented whole or in large chunks to maintain a satisfying crunch for months.
To ensure preservation, the seasoning paste becomes richer and more potent. It is heavily packed with salted fermented shrimp (saeu-jeot) and anchovy extract, providing a strong umami backbone that mellows over time.
Because the fermentation happens slowly in the cold, winter batches are also the place for "luxury" ingredients: locals often tuck fresh oysters, sweet pear slices, chestnuts, and pine nuts between the leaves, creating a flavor profile that evolves from crisp and refreshing to deeply savory.

Rising slowly from the water, this monumental black stone stele represents an ancient Mesopotamian inscribed monument, recovered during a modern underwater archaeological operation.
The discovery likely took place in a coastal or riverine context of the Near East, where artifacts were lost to flooding, trade routes, or later human activity. Scholars date the stele to the early second millennium BCE, an era when laws, royal decrees, and religious texts were carved into durable stone to assert authority and divine order.
The surface is densely covered with cuneiform inscriptions arranged in precise vertical columns, while the arched top bears relief figures associated with kingship and the gods. Made of hard basalt or diorite, the stele was designed to endure.
Watching it emerge from the water evokes a powerful emotion: the return of an ancient voice long silenced, lifted back into the light after centuries of darkness and depth.

In 1961, the world witnessed one of the most extreme feats ever recorded in cycling.
French cyclist José Meiffret reached an astonishing 204.788 km/h (127.3 mph)—a speed that still sounds unreal today.
Meiffret had already set a previous record of 186.625 km/h, but he wanted more.
After an entire winter of preparation, he built a custom bicycle designed purely for speed: a reinforced frame, wooden wheels, and a massive 175-tooth front chainring paired with a 17-tooth cog, allowing the bike to travel about 16 meters per pedal stroke.
To overcome air resistance, Meiffret rode in the slipstream of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, coordinating with the driver via megaphone as speeds climbed to terrifying levels. On his second attempt, he covered the final kilometer in just 17.58 seconds, sealing one of the most dangerous and daring records in cycling history.
It remains a powerful reminder of how far human ambition—and courage—can push the limits of physics on two wheels. 🚲⚡

In Thailand, a unique annual tradition celebrates an unlikely group of local celebrities—monkeys.
Every year, in the town of Lopburi, a grand buffet is laid out specifically for the local macaque population as a gesture of gratitude for the role they play in attracting tourists. The event, known as the Monkey Buffet Festival, turns city squares and temple grounds into banquet halls filled with fruit towers, trays of sticky rice, and colorful desserts.
The monkeys, already accustomed to roaming freely among the town's ancient ruins and bustling streets, are invited to feast on an array of foods carefully arranged by volunteers and local businesses. Pineapples, bananas, melons, and even flavored drinks are presented in playful displays, sometimes carved into shapes or stacked into pyramids.
The festival began as a symbolic thank-you for how the monkeys boost tourism, drawing visitors from around the world to see their cheeky behavior and unique place in the urban environment. Over time, it has grown into a cultural spectacle that includes parades, music, and costumed performers—all centered around the monkeys' midday meal.

Château du Sailhant
Château du Sailhant is a 1,000 year old château-fort in Auvergne region, central France. It stands on a triangular basaltic spur.
The walls of the castle just like its 7 towers are made of ancient gray lava blocks while the roof is covered with stone slabs.
The first fortification at the site was a wooden tower protected by a wall and a dry moat – actually this is now the only side one can access the chateau.
In the early 11th c. the Lords of Sailhant replaced the wooden tower with a square stone keep.
The Saillans family kept expanding the fortress – by the 13th c. the spur was closed off by a curtain wall with ramparts and 2 towers and a deep, dry moat. By the 18th c. the chateau was in a dilapidated state, some structures were demolished.
In 1997 the ruined castle was bought by architect Joseph Pell Lombardi from New York, who made it his residence after 25 years of restoration efforts.
