THE DOOMSDAY DJ:
TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE

This week in 1987, the Europe single “The Final Countdown” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #83 (January 24)
The single from the LP of the same name, written by lead singer Joey Tempest was based on a keyboard riff he made in the early 1980s, with lyrics inspired by David Bowie's "Space Oddity".
At first, band members expressed mixed reactions to it, including guitarist John Norum who was put off by the synth intro but said that he was glad they didn't listen to him.
Tempest described their uncertainty: "Some of the guys in the band thought it was too different for a rock band.
But in the end I fought hard to make sure it got used."
“The Final Countdown” became an instant worldwide hit, not only going to #1 in the UK, but also in 24 other countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland and Sweden, and peaking at #2 in Australia, #5 in Canada, and #8 in the US.
Europe became only the second Swedish band to hit #1 in the UK.
The song has also become a favourite at sporting events around the world.
