Marcus Aurelius
"There is but one thing of real value - to cultivate truth and justice, and to live without anger in the midst of lying and unjust men."
"Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher.
He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors, and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD.
He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161.
Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and his mother and grandfather raised him.
After Hadrian's adoptive son, Aelius Caesar, died in 138, the emperor adopted Marcus's uncle Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and Lucius, the son of Aelius.
Hadrian died that year, and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus's daughter Faustina in 145."

On this day in 1977, the Eagles LP “Hotel California” regained the #1 position on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (February 5)
It first hit #1 on January 15, but was bumped off the top spot by “Songs in the Key of Life” by Stevie Wonder, and the triple live album “Wings Over America”.
“Hotel California” became one of the most iconic and best-selling albums of all time, and was Eagles first album with guitarist Joe Walsh, who had replaced founding member Bernie Leadon, and the last album to feature bass player Randy Meisner.
It has been certified 26× Platinum in the US, and has sold over 32 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album after “Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)”.
The album went to #1 in the US, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Norway.
It has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time.
In 2003 and 2012, it was ranked #37 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
Three singles were released from the album, with two topping the US Billboard Hot 100, "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California", whilst "Life in the Fast Lane" reached #11.
The album was also nominated for Album of the Year but lost to Fleetwood Mac's “Rumours”.
While the band were recording the album, Black Sabbath were recording “Technical Ecstasy” in an adjacent studio at Criteria Studios in Miami.
Eagles were forced to stop recording on numerous occasions because Black Sabbath were too loud and the sound was coming through the wall.
The last track of the album, "The Last Resort", had to be re-recorded a number of times due to noise from the next studio.
In an interview with the Dutch magazine ZigZag shortly before the album's release, Henley said:
“This is a concept album, there's no way to hide it, but it's not set in the old West, the cowboy thing, you know. It's more urban this time….
It's our bicentennial year, you know, the country is 200 years old, so we figured since we are the Eagles and the Eagle is our national symbol, that we were obliged to make some kind of a little bicentennial statement using California as a microcosm of the whole United States, or the whole world, if you will, and to try to wake people up and say,
‘We've been okay so far, for 200 years, but we're gonna have to change if we're gonna continue to be around.'"
Henley said of the themes of the songs in the album:
“They're the same themes that run through all of our work: loss of innocence, the cost of naiveté, the perils of fame, of excess; exploration of the dark underbelly of the American dream, idealism realized and idealism thwarted, illusion versus reality, the difficulties of balancing loving relationships and work, trying to square the conflicting relationship between business and art; the corruption in politics, the fading away of the Sixties dream of peace, love and understanding."
The front cover artwork is a photograph of The Beverly Hills Hotel shot just before sunset by David Alexander with design and art direction by Kosh.
The image was shot 60 feet above Sunset Boulevard on top of a cherry picker.
The rear album cover and gatefold was shot in the lobby of the Lido Hotel in Hollywood.

On this day in 1991, the Divinyls single “I Touch Myself” went to #1 on the Australian Singles Chart (February 4)
It was also a Top 5 hit on the other side of the Pacific…
When released in the United States, the song caused a minor controversy, but performed brilliantly, peaking at #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 after receiving extensive play on modern rock radio, which was more accepting of the song's subject matter.
Despite having a catalogue of hits in Australia, Divinyls are considered a bit of a “one-hit wonder” in the US, as "I Touch Myself" was their only US Top 40 hit.
It also went to #10 in the UK and #13 in Canada.
The I Touch Myself Project was launched in 2014, twelve months after the passing of Chrissy Amphlett to breast cancer.
Amphlett was passionate about spreading awareness of the importance of early detection and wanted the song to be adapted as an anthem for breast health around the world.
The Project was created in Chrissy’s honour with a mission to create educational forums to remind women to check their breasts regularly and to take action if there are any changes.
In 2018, Serena Williams recorded the song and posted her version on instagram. It became the most retweeted post, the most talked about campaign on Instagram and the most watched video during International Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Winter unfolds slowly in the reduction woodcuts of Gordon Mortensen — snowdrifts shaped by wind, fields resting under pale light, and trees standing in quiet rhythm.
One of the best-known reduction woodcut print artists in the United States, Mortensen begins with watercolor studies to understand the subtle color relationships that will later be carved away. A single image can involve up to sixty-four colors and take as long as three months to complete, each layer permanently removed as the block evolves.
Though the results feel painterly, the works remain unmistakably woodcuts — rich with layered color, texture, and the visible grain of the block itself.
Born near Arnegard, North Dakota in 1938, Mortensen trained at the Minneapolis School of Art (now MCAD) and the University of Minnesota. Originally a portrait painter, he ultimately found greater freedom in reduction woodcutting, a medium perfectly suited to his patient, contemplative vision.

Octopuses have a highly unusual circulatory system compared to other animals.
Two of their hearts pump blood to the gills, where oxygen is absorbed from the water. The third heart then circulates oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.
Their blood appears blue because it contains hemocyanin, a copper-based molecule that transports oxygen.
This substance works more efficiently than iron-based hemoglobin in cold, low-oxygen environments.
This adaptation helps octopuses survive in deep and chilly ocean waters, where oxygen levels are often lower than at the surface.

History made for elephants.
Indonesia has officially ended elephant rides nationwide and it’s a huge win for animal welfare and ethical tourism.
In a binding move, the Indonesian government ordered all conservation centers and tourist facilities to stop elephant riding and shift to observation-only, cruelty-free experiences. Any place that ignores the order risks losing its operating license.
The directive, issued in late 2025, came after years of pressure from animal welfare groups exposing the suffering behind elephant rides. Painful training, restricted movement, and long-term physical and mental harm are all part of the industry experts have condemned for decades.
By January 25, 2026, even Mason Elephant Park in Bali one of the last to offer rides shut the practice down and began transitioning to ethical tourism.
What this really means:
No chains.
No forced training.
No carrying tourists for entertainment.
Just elephants being elephants - grazing, bathing, socializing, and living with dignity.
Indonesia didn’t just change a rule.
It changed the future for captive elephants.

While it looks like a steam engine, it’s a famous mutant vehicle (art car) that roams the desert at the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Here is the corrected and more detailed breakdown:
Vehicle Stats
• Name: The Pariah Express.
• Artist: It was built by Emmett Moffett and his crew.
• Purpose: It’s used as a "public transit" vehicle on the Playa (the desert floor). It's one of the few big cars that lets anyone hop on for a ride to get across the dusty five-mile city.
• The Look: It’s a "steampunk" design.
They used a large truck frame and covered it with recycled metal and wood to make it look like an 1800s locomotive.
• The Photographer: As the watermark says, this famous shot was taken by Scott London, who is basically the go-to guy for high-quality photos of Burning Man art.
Fun Facts
• It’s not just a prop: It actually moves! It has a real engine hidden inside and can carry dozens of people at a time.
• The "Cowcatcher": That red metal grate on the front is a classic train feature.
In the old days, it pushed cows off the tracks, but here it's mostly just for style (and to keep people from accidentally getting under the wheels).
• Day vs. Night: In the daytime, it looks like a dusty antique, but at night, it’s usually covered in glowing lights so people can find it in the dark.

The original manuscript of Jack Kerouac's classic 1957 novel "On the Road" is about to be sold at auction — where it's expected to fetch as much as $4 million.
Typed out over a feverish three-week period in April 1951, this draft was created on one continuous scroll measuring 121 feet long.
Because he could type extremely quickly and hated having to pause to load new pages into his typewriter, Kerouac always liked to use long scrolls that wouldn't slow him down.
Likewise, this manuscript pauses for neither paragraph breaks nor chapter titles, instead presenting its epic tale of Beat Generation misadventures in one unbroken stream.
This draft even uses the characters' original names — taken straight from the real-life writers and artists that inspired the novel's legendary exploits — before the publisher insisted on changing them.

17 Home Security Tips for Homesteaders.
Although homesteads come in all shapes and sizes, it stands to reason that the more acreage you have, the more challenging it is to keep your property safe and secure. Also, your risk can be heightened during a significant natural or human-made crisis.
While there are no guarantees for keeping your acreage completely intruder-proof, this article explains steps you can take to mitigate your risk. It covers 17 home security tips for homesteaders—let's call them “homestead security tips.”
1. Evaluate Access to Your Property
Take a detailed walking tour, looking for any areas that provide access to intruders. You may want to invite your insurance agent or a local law enforcement officer for their perspectives on weak spots. Then, consider your options and develop a plan to secure these areas.
2. Build or Add to Your Fencing
Installing sturdy fencing along the perimeter of your acreage along with locked gates can be a powerful deterrent. Arrange to get alerts on your phone and other devices when your gates open.
3. Install Better Lighting
Thieves like to operate in the dark. You can make your place less appealing to them by setting up motion-detection lighting that illuminates your pathways and driveways. These sensors can be linked to your phone so you can know when someone is moving around on your property.
4. Set Up Video Cameras
Security cameras in key areas can alert you when someone enters your property and give you additional eyes and ears. You can link these cameras with your smartphone for round-the-clock surveillance no matter where you are.
5. Build Relationships With Your Neighbors
You and your neighbors can help deter crime by notifying each other when something or someone doesn't seem right. Ask neighbors to keep an eye on your place when you're away and offer to return the favor for them.
6. Install a Security System
You can find a security system to meet the needs of your homestead and your budget that includes window and door alarms, interior motion sensors, and other features.
7. Invest in Stronger Doors and Better Locks
How hard would it be to kick or push in the doors to your home, garage, and outbuildings? Consider replacing your existing doors with reinforced models that also have sensors to alert you when they open. Install heavy deadbolts to add to the security of stronger doors.
8. Get Some Dogs
Dogs have much better hearing than we do, and they often know the second a vehicle or person on foot enters their property. Although dogs of all sizes can serve as early warning devices, two or more large dogs with deep barks can definitely deter unwelcome visitors.
9. Use Pea Gravel On Pathways
Adding a layer of small gravel on all walkways on your property is another security measure. The crunching sound that occurs when anyone sets foot on small gravel can alert you (and your dogs) to an intruder’s footsteps or a vehicle on the driveway.
10. Use Your Landscaping Wisely
Do you love fresh berries? Consider having your berry bushes serve a dual purpose by planting them strategically. For example, when you plant a row of thorny bushes beneath windows, you can make an intruder think twice about trying to enter there.
11. Create Ditches
Another way to mitigate risk is to dig four- to five-foot ditches as boundaries in critical areas of your property. Be sure to check for any local regulations regarding digging ditches on private acreage.
12. Place Valuables in a Safe
Although you may have some valuables in a safety deposit box at your bank, there are certain things you want close at hand. A home safe can protect your cash, jewelry, documents, and other important items from fire and theft.
13. Forget The Welcome Mat
Instead, post signs that let folks know that you don't want uninvited visitors. Look for the following signs as a way to show you mean business:
Security cameras in use
No Solicitors
Do Not Enter
Private Property
No Trespassing
Beware of Dog
14. Maintain Your Property
Aim to show that you're home even when you're not to discourage intruders. Put interior lights on variable timers. Keep your yard and grounds neat and tidy. Arrange for all mail and deliveries to be picked up promptly.
15. Devise An Escape Plan
Following the previous tips will help make your homestead less of a target, but none of them are fool-proof. During these uneasy times, your family needs an escape plan to follow during emergencies.
Just as every homestead is unique, so will be each escape plan. Here are some of the main components to include:
Create and print out maps of your property. Mark areas where to flee during a weather disaster, such as a wildfire or a tornado.
Set a meeting spot away from the homestead for family members who may have been away from home during the emergency.
Conduct practice emergency drills that include all members of the family.
Plan ahead for livestock safety. This document from the USDA can help.
16. Avoid Oversharing
Refrain from posting photos and details online about the new equipment you just bought or the dream vacation you are taking. You never know who will see or pass along that information to your detriment. Teach your children to be mindful about how much information they share with others about your homestead as well.
17. Learn and Practice Self-Defense Methods
The best defense is to keep intruders off your property in the first place. However, if someone who intends harm has gained entry, self-defense takes center stage. There are many resources to help guide you in equipping yourself and your family members for self-defense. Here are a few of them:
Protecting Your Homestead by Grant Cunningham
Prepper's Self-Defense Tips by Ronald Williams
Preparing for the Unexpected by Bush Garrison
The Homesteading Guide To Security video by Ravenwood Acres
Secure Your Homestead video by Heartway Farms
For the most part, thieves are looking for opportunity not confrontation. By using your common sense and following the tips in this article, you can take away any opportunities your homestead offers.

9 Best Firearms To Have After SHTF.
After the basic survival necessities of shelter, water, fire, and food have been satisfied, acquiring a firearm should be one of your highest priorities after the SHTF. In the event of a post-apocalyptic scenario, however, you may not be able to find one. For this reason, a good firearm is one of the most important things to acquire ahead of time.
Firearms can add an incredible amount of power to your inventory. With them, you have the ability to hunt, to defend yourself, and the leverage you might need in social scenarios to tip the balance of power in your favor.
In this article, we'll cover the 9 best firearms to have after the SHTF: 3 rifles, 3 handguns, and 3 shotguns.
Rifles
There are many dissenting opinions out there about which firearm is the most important, but taking into account weapon maintenance, ammo weight, and availability, and overall weapon functionality, the rifle is probably the most useful.
It can be used readily in any hunting or defensive scenario you may come across. These three rugged options will serve you well almost anywhere.
1. Ruger 10/22 Takedown
One of the best, most versatile firearms you can have in a survival scenario is the Ruger 10/22 Takedown. This long rifle is excellent for hunting small game. Its .22 ammunition is readily available and extremely lightweight, making it the obvious choice when you want to carry hundreds of rounds of ammunition at a time.
Generally speaking, the ammunition is also fairly cheap, making it easy to stockpile ahead of time. The Ruger 10/22 Takedown is semiautomatic with a 10-round magazine, meaning it's ideal for situations where you need to fire more quickly than you could with a bolt-action rifle.
2. ArmaLite AR-15
The classic, ever-popular AR-15 makes this list due to its durability, ease of use, and availability. The AR-15 is common enough that you could easily find parts for it, and its design makes it one of the easiest to clean and take apart. There are dozens of AR-15 variants out there, and most of these are good options as well.
Make sure you have your AR-15 chambered in 5.56, which allows it to shoot both 5.56 rounds and .223 rounds. This gives you added versatility if you need to forage for ammunition at some point.
3. Mosin-Nagant
Your third rifle option should be something of a larger caliber–think in terms of being able to take down the biggest game in your area. The Russian-made Mosin-Nagant fires a 7.62×54 round, packing a punch that most big game won’t be likely to shrug off.
Another benefit to the Mosin-Nagant is that millions of them were made in the earlier years of the 20th century, making them easy to find and their ammunition fairly common. This firearm can even fill the role of sniper rifle should the need arise.
Handguns
Handguns give you the element of surprise and convenient protection. While you can hunt with handguns, you probably wouldn’t choose to unless it was your only option. With that in mind, here are some of the best pistol options you should try.
4. Glock 17
Perhaps the most useful handgun to have in preparation for the SHTF is the Glock 17. With a magazine capacity of 17 rounds, you also carry almost twice the amount of ammunition as some other handguns, which is useful since its 9mm round doesn’t have the highest stopping power out there.
This weapon is the most widely used handgun by law enforcement all around the world. Not only does this mean the weapon is extremely reliable, it also means it is readily available should you ever need replacement parts or extra ammunition.
5. Colt M1911
The 1911 is an all-around winner when it comes to pistols. With a slim profile that still has all the stopping power of a .45 round, this handgun is a good choice because of its durability and availability. A tried and true weapon since World War I, this handgun will serve you well as your personal sidearm in any survival situation.
6. Smith and Wesson 586
No good handgun list would be complete without a tried and true revolver. The Smith and Wesson 586 is one of the most reliable revolvers available. Extremely easy to load and to clean, the Smith and Wesson 586 is the perfect survivalist pistol. Its only disadvantage is its ammunition capacity (6 or 7 rounds).
However, the revolver more than makes up for this by being versatile. The Smith and Wesson 586 can fire both .357 and .38 special rounds, making finding ammunition for the weapon easier.
Shotguns
Last but certainly not least, the shotgun is an important part of the survival arsenal. Most game can be hunted with one, and nothing says “don’t mess with me” like a shotgun.
The only reason this list didn’t rank its value above that of the rifle’s is for the weight of its ammunition and its limited range. Still, for versatility, you can’t beat a good scattergun. Here are three great options when the SHTF.
7. Mossberg 500 12 Gauge
Easy to use and easy to maintain, the Mossberg 500 easily makes the top of the list for survival shotguns. While it is made in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410 bore variants, the 12 gauge is the most popular and allows the most customization.
Its pump action allows you to deliver firepower quickly and effectively–sometimes defending yourself takes more than one shot.
8. H&R Single Shot 12 Gauge
While many people dislike single shot shotguns for their slowness both in hunting and self-defense, the H&R single shot 12 gauge is perfect because it is a platform of possibilities. You can use a wide variety of chamber adapters, which allows you to effectively scavenge and use almost any kind of ammunition that comes your way.
Whether you find shotgun shells, birdshot, slugs, or a multitude of rifle ammunition, the H&R single shot 12 gauge with chamber adapters can have you covered.
9. Chiappa X-Caliber
The Chiappa X-Caliber is the ultimate survival option, sporting the ability to shoot both 12 gauge shotgun shells and .22 rounds with its double trigger, over-under style. It includes eight adapters that allow it to shoot eight separate pistol calibers. This truly is the one-tool option of the firearms world, if such a thing exists.
