Marine Life in The Philippines & S.E. Asia. and the World. Post #234:
Need to get your sweetheart's attention this Valentine's Day? Take a tip from the white-spotted pufferfish... and draw them a picture 🐡✨🧑🎨
Males of this species are true underwater artists, sculpting intricate, geometric sand patterns to impress potential mates. First discovered in 1995, these seafloor designs baffled scientists until researchers witnessed a pufferfish artist in action in 2011.
Using only their fins, they carve symmetrical “love nests” up to two meters wide, carefully arranging ridges and grooves in mesmerizing detail. The better the design, the more likely a female is to choose the artist as her mate. It’s a masterpiece with a purpose—one that turns the seafloor into an underwater art gallery of love.

It also went all the way to #1 in New Zealand, #2 in Canada, and #15 in Australia.

On this day in 1974, the soundtrack from the movie “American Graffiti” peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart (February 9)
Stars galore in this movie, which was directed by George Lucas and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, and Suzanne Somers among others.
The film set in the early 60s had a killer soundtrack, including "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & his Comets, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love" by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, "That'll Be the Day" by Buddy Holly & The Crickets, “Surfin' Safari" by The Beach Boys, and “The Book of Love" by The Monotones.
All songs on the original US release of the soundtrack album are presented in the order they appeared in the film.
In the UK, the soundtrack album was slightly reordered, leaving out three tracks; both Beach Boys songs and "Teen Angel" by Mark Dinning.
The album is thus retitled "38 Original Hits from the Sound Track of American Graffiti", rather than the original “41 Original Hits….”
On the charts it went to #6 in Canada, #10 in the US, #12 in Australia, #15 in New Zealand, and #37 in the UK.

On this day in 1980, the Peter Gabriel single “Games Without Frontiers” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #48 (February 9)
The song from his self-titled LP became Gabriel's first Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #4, and – tied with 1986's "Sledgehammer" – his highest-charting song in the UK.
It also went to #3 in Ireland, #7 in Canada, #44 in Australia, and #48 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Another great track from the creative genius Gabriel, with lyrics that many interpret as anti-war, but are definitely along the theme of adults acting like children.
That’s Kate Bush singing the ethereal backup vocals "Jeux Sans Fronteires” (not “She’s so popular” which features in many “Mis-heard lyrics” lists).
"We had someone else sing the 'Jeux Sans Fronteires' line, and we realized the accent wasn't so great," recalled co-producer Steve Lillywhite, who wouldn't identify the original vocalist to Uncut, “So Peter decided to ask Kate down.
It was easy, and great fun.
No more than half an hour."
The whistling is Gabriel along with producers Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham.

On this day in 1986, the Robert Palmer single “Addicted to Love” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #83 ( February 8 )
It all started with a guitar riff that came to Palmer in a dream….
He told Q magazine in 1988, "That noisy riff woke me up. I went downstairs, got out the tape recorder, then went back to bed.
Next morning, I thought, Phew, caught one there!"
Palmer intended the song to be a duet with Chaka Khan, but her record company at the time would not grant her a release to work on Palmer's label, Island Records, so he had to erase her part and re-record her high notes before releasing it.
Chaka Khan is still credited for the vocal arrangements in the album liner notes.
Chaka Khan did appear on Steve Winwood's "Higher Love," which coincidentally beat “Addicted to Love” for the 1987 Record of the Year Grammy…
Andy Taylor of Duran Duran (and a bandmate of Palmer's from The Power Station) plays lead guitar on the song.
Slade’s Noddy Holder once said in an interview:
“The one main song that I wish that I'd written and recorded is 'Addicted to Love' by Robert Palmer.
To me, that's a perfect pop song.
Everything about it really hits the nail on the head."
The song from his “Riptide” LP went all the way to #1 in the US and Australia, #2 in New Zealand, #4 in Canada, Ireland, and South Africa, and #5 in the UK.
Undoubtedly a key component in the success of the record was the iconic video clip, which was one of the most popular and widely broadcast videos of the day…

Last week in 1984, the Nena single “99 Red Balloons” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #58 (February 4)
And it went all the way to #1 in the UK.
In the US, the English-language version did not chart, while the German-language recording became Nena's only US hit, eventually peaking at #2.
The German version “99 Luftballons” went to #1 in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Germany.
The anti-war song lost a bit in the English translation, but the English version topped the charts in the UK, Canada and Ireland.
It was to be Nena’s only UK hit…
I wasn’t the only one that preferred the German language version…
From the outset, Nena lead singer Gabriele Kerner and other members of the band expressed disapproval of the English version of the song, "99 Red Balloons".
In March 1984, the band's keyboard player and song co-writer Uwe Fahrenkrog Petersen said, "We made a mistake there.
I think the song loses something in translation and even sounds silly."
In another interview that month, other members of the band were also quoted as being "not completely satisfied" with the English version.
The lyrics of the original German version tell a story of 99 balloons, which are mistaken for UFOs, causing a general to send pilots to investigate.
Finding nothing but balloons, the pilots put on a large show of fire power.
The display of force worries the nations along the borders and the war ministers on each side encourage conflict to grab power for themselves.
In the end, a cataclysmic war results from the otherwise harmless flight of balloons and causes devastation on all sides without a victor, as indicated in the denouement of the song: "99 Jahre Krieg ließen keinen Platz für Sieger," which translates to "99 years of war have left no place for winners."
The anti-war song finishes with the singer walking through the devastated ruins of the world and finding a single balloon…"'Denk' an dich und lass' ihn fliegen…” (or "Think of you and let it go…”

Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire, England, is a nearly 1,800-year-old example of Roman luxury and innovation.
Its tepidarium, or warm room, was heated by a sophisticated hypocaust system, where hot air circulated beneath raised floors and through wall flues to maintain a comfortable temperature.
The intricate mosaic floors, still visible today, highlight the artistry of the era, while the preserved heating system showcases the advanced engineering that made Roman bathhouses a hallmark of their civilization.

On this day in 1976, the America compilation LP “History - America’s Greatest Hits” debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #60 (February 7)
By late 1975, America had released five commercially successful studio albums and a number of hit singles, including two #1 hits.
The second of those, “Sister Golden Hair", had recently topped the charts, so Warner Bros. Records decided to capitalize on the band’s commercial momentum and growing catalogue by releasing their first greatest hits compilation.
Released in November 1975, the album contained all eleven of America's charting singles to date, along with an edited version of "Sandman", an extremely popular track from the debut album that had never been released as a single.
As America tragics will know, “History” keeps up the band’s tradition of naming albums beginning with the letter "H".
The first seven tracks of the album, having been recorded prior to legendary Beatles producer George Martin's involvement with the band, were specially remixed by Martin for this release.
Due to the commercial success and enduring popularity of this album, over time the remixed versions of America's hits on “History” have become as recognizable as the original singles themselves.
All the big ones are on here; “Horse With No Name”, “Sister Golden Hair”, “Ventura Highway”, “Sandman”, etc…
On the charts, the album peaked at #1 in Canada, #3 in the US and New Zealand, #11 in Australia, #25 in France, and #60 in the UK.
Fun fact: The classic cover artwork was by a then-unknown artist named Phil Hartman, later famous as an actor and comedian, and brother of the group's then-manager, John Hartmann.
Phil Hartman went on to become a longterm, Emmy-winning member of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL), and voiced the characters of Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure on The Simpsons.
The liner notes spell his last name as "Hartmann"—the original spelling of his name.
