On this day in 1979, The Police single “Roxanne” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #82 (February 24)
So basically, after this song came out, you couldn’t go anywhere without someone screaming at you “ROOOOOOXXANNE” in a screeching falsetto.
Well, at least that’s what was happening at the high school I went to around the time of this song…
This was first single with Andy Summers on guitar, and the first major-label release by The Police, who were struggling at the time.
A year earlier, they released their debut single "Fall Out" on an independent label owned by Stewart Copeland's brother Miles.
The song failed to chart, and the group felt a lot of pressure to produce something that would keep them off the dole.
Sting wrote the song after being inspired by wandering through the red light district of Paris in October 1977 while the band were there to perform at the Nashville Club.
Andy Summers recalled:
Sting played it for me in my living room early on. He was very shy at first bringing in his songs. But it was brilliant, and later on we all worked it out in a damp basement in North London.
I remember Stewart telling Sting where to place the bass notes, which was a bit tricky.
Miles Copeland came down to hear us and we were kind of embarrassed to play it for him, because Miles had blinders on and was into fast and furious punk.
But much to his credit, he said, 'This is great, a knockout!' I was really surprised.
And he took it to A&M and got a contract for one single.
I don't think it ever broke the Top 40 in America, but eventually it became the Police signature tune.”
If you listen, near the start of the song you can hear Sting accidentally sitting down on the keys of an upright piano in the studio and someone laughing, which happened by accident while the tape was rolling, which they ended up keeping and using mixed in with the intro of the track!
It was a slow burner, but It eventually got to #8 in New Zealand, #12 in the UK, #19 in the Netherlands, #22 in Ireland, #31 in Canada, #32 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #34 in Australia.
The song ranked #388 on the Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and was voted No. 85 by VH1 on its list of the "100 Greatest Rock Songs".
In 2008, "Roxanne" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
It’s also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Why You’re Addicted To Your Phone
— And 3 Ways To Fix It.
Do you ever feel more “naked” without your phone than without your clothes? 😅
If you’re constantly scrolling, checking notifications every few minutes, or feeling uneasy when your phone isn’t nearby, you’re not alone.
There’s even a term for that anxious feeling without your device: NOMO (no-mobile-phobia) — a phrase coined in 2010 by a UK study. It describes the discomfort of being without your phone. Sound familiar?
Let’s check in honestly:
How do you feel when you can’t find your phone?
When someone else is holding it?
When you see families sitting together… but everyone is silently scrolling?
And what about “phubbing” — ignoring someone in front of you to check your phone? Have you done it? Have you felt it done to you? It changes the quality of connection, often fueled by FOMO (fear of missing out), habit, and mindlessness.
Here’s the tricky part: phone addiction isn’t officially recognized in the DSM-V, and there’s no “digital police” to tell you when you’ve crossed the line. Constant use has become normalized. Meanwhile, tech giants like Apple and Google design products to keep us engaged — and profitable.
But this isn’t just about habits. It’s about brain chemistry.
Screen use triggers dopamine — the same “pleasure chemical” involved in addictions like gambling or cocaine. Even anticipating a notification can create a rush. Over time, we become conditioned to crave that hit of stimulation — even when it’s no longer truly satisfying.
So how do we fix it?
Not by throwing away our phones — but by changing our relationship with them.
3 Ways to Break the Cycle
1️⃣ Check Your Body Before You Check Your Phone
Pause. Notice your posture. Are you slouching? Is your neck tight? Wrist aching? Hunching over your phone can worsen mood and create a physical-emotional feedback loop. Sit upright. Relax your shoulders. Sometimes awareness alone reduces the urge.
2️⃣ Ask: “Why Am I Picking This Up?”
Is it intentional — sending a message, checking directions?
Or is it boredom, stress, fatigue, loneliness, overwhelm?
Mindfulness helps you catch those automatic mini-compulsions. If you’re tired or frustrated, scrolling may not actually meet your need.
3️⃣ Notice How You Feel Afterward
After 20 minutes of scrolling, do you feel energized — or drained? Calm — or restless? Without judging yourself, treat your behavior as data. Maybe texting friends soothes you, but endless social media doesn’t. Awareness gives you power.
Pro tip: Track your screen time for a week. Both iPhone and Android have built-in tools. Some apps even provide an “addiction score.” You can also turn your lock screen into a mindfulness reminder with a question like: “What do I need right now?”
Smartphones aren’t inherently bad. They’re powerful tools. But how we use them deeply affects our focus, posture, relationships, sleep, and mental health.
You deserve credit for even reflecting on this.
So here’s the real question:
Do you want to primarily experience life… or your screen?
Your phone can either steal your attention — or become a reminder to come back to yourself.

Cephalopod lovers, meet a squid that’s as cute as its name: the dumpling squid (Euprymna tasmanica)!
Also known as the southern bobtail squid, this cephalopod inhabits shallow waters off the coast of southern Australia.
It’s an ambush predator and uses mucus glands in its skin to coat itself in sand, where it then lies in wait for prey, like shrimp and small fish.
Dumplings must learn to hunt fast: Because males of this species die shortly after mating and females die soon after laying eggs, newborn squid need to fend for themselves. These precocious hatchlings can snag prey twice their size!

On this day in 1980, the Blondie single “Atomic” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #3 (February 23)
The song from the “Eat to the Beat” LP written by Debbie Harry and keyboard player Jimmy Destri only made it to #39 in the US, despite “Call Me” occupying the #1 spot when “Atomic” debuted.
It did significantly better elsewhere in the world though, going all the way to #1 in the UK, #3 in Ireland, #5 in Norway and Austria, #7 in New Zealand, #8 in Belgium, #12 in Australia, #16 in South Africa, and #17 in the Netherlands.

On this day in 1974, the Billy Joel single “Piano Man” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #94 (February 23)
Joel's first major hit and his signature song, "Piano Man" went on to peak at #20 in Australia, #10 in Canada, #14 in New Zealand, and #25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The legendary song was written from Billy’s own experiences playing in a piano bar for six months in 1972–73 at the now defunct Executive Room in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles.
He played using the alias "Bill Martin" (Joel's full name is William Martin Joel).
Joel has stated that all of the characters depicted in the song were based on real people.
"John at the bar" was really the bartender who worked during Joel's shift at the piano bar.
“Paul is a real estate novelist" refers to a real estate agent named Paul who would sit at the bar each night working on what he believed would be the next great American novel.
“The waitress is practicing politics" refers to Joel's first wife Elizabeth Weber, with whom he moved to Los Angeles from New York in 1972 and who worked at The Executive Room as a waitress while Joel played the piano.
Joel had moved from New York to L.A. to record his first album, “Cold Spring Harbor”, which was marred by a mastering error by the album's producers at Family Productions, the first label that signed Joel.
After this bad experience, Joel wanted to leave his contract with Family Productions for Columbia Records, but the contract that he had signed made this very difficult, so Joel stated that he was "hiding out" at the bar, performing under the name Bill Martin, while lawyers at Columbia Records tried to get him out of his first record deal.

On this day in 1977, the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band single “Blinded By The Light” went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (February 19)
The song was written by Bruce Springsteen and originally appeared on his 1973 debut album “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.”
This 1976 cover from the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band LP “The Roaring Silence” also went to #1 in Canada, #6 in the UK, #8 in New Zealand, and #11 in Australia.
Believe it or not, Manfred Mann's Earth Band's recording of "Blinded by the Light" is Bruce Springsteen's only #1 single as a songwriter on the US Billboard Hot 100; his highest charting single as a solo performer was "Dancing in the Dark" in 1984, which reached #2, and his only #1 was as part of the USA for Africa ensemble that recorded "We Are the World".
There are two other interesting elements of the song; the first was the idea of drummer Chris Slade to use the chords of "Chopsticks" (the tune had at that point already been integrated into the arrangement) as a transition between song parts, and the second was the "deuce"/"douche" confusion.
Manfred Mann recalled:
“I don't think Springsteen liked our ‘Blinded by the Light’, 'cos we sang 'wrapped up like a douche', and it wasn't written like that and I screwed it up completely.
It sounded like 'douche' instead of 'deuce', 'cos of the technical process – a faulty azimuth due to tape-head angles, and it meant we couldn't remix it.
Warners in America said, 'You've got to change 'douche', 'cos the Southern Bible belt radio stations think it's about a vaginal douche, and they have problems with body parts down there.' We tried to change it to 'deuce' but then the rest of the track sounded horrible, so we had to leave it.
We just said, 'If it's not a hit, it's not.'
But in the end, it was #1 in America, and so many people came up to us after and said, 'You know why it made #1?... Everyone was talking about whether it was deuce or douche.'
Apparently Springsteen thought we'd done it deliberately, which we hadn't, so if I ever saw him I'd avoid him and cringe away like a frightened little boy!”
Springsteen has joked about confusion over the lyrics, claiming that it was not until Manfred Mann rewrote the song to be about a feminine hygiene product that it became popular…
