🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1979, the Neil Young single “Comes a Time” debuted on the Australian charts at #92 (February 26) Taken from the LP of the same name, it was rumoured that Young had personally purchased some 200,000 vinyl copies of “Comes a Time” having been unhappy with the album's sound, owing to damage that occurred to the master tape during shipment to the mixing facility. The version of the album most widely available today was personally remixed by Young from the safety copy of the original master. In a March 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Young claimed that he, in fact, used the 200,000 LPs as shingles for a barn roof! The song, like most of the album, features harmony vocals from Nicolette Larson, and J. J. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1976, AC/DC shot the video clip for "It's A Long Way To The Top, (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" for the Australian music television program “Countdown”. It featured the band's then-current lineup, along with members of the Rats of Tobruk Pipe Band, on the back of a flat-bed truck travelling on Swanston Street in Melbourne. image "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" is the first track of the group's album “T.N.T.”, released in December 1975, and was written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young and Bon Scott. The song is notable for combining bagpipes with hard rock instrumentation. George Young (the older brother of Angus and Malcolm), having heard that Bon Scott was in a pipe band, encouraged the use of bagpipes. Scott obliged despite having never played them before having actually been a drummer in the band. Scott used a set of bagpipes to play the song live until 1976. There was an incident where he set them down at the corner of a stage and they were destroyed by fans. Subsequent live performances used a recording of the song's bagpipe part or an extended guitar solo by Angus. A slightly shortened version of the song is also the first track on the international version of “High Voltage”, released in May 1976. This version appears only on the vinyl release and the 2003 CD reissue. The full version of the song is also on the Volts CD of the Bonfire box set, released in 1997. image "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" was a signature song for Bon Scott. Brian Johnson, who replaced Scott as AC/DC's lead vocalist after Scott's death in 1980 until his departure in 2016, did not perform it out of respect for his predecessor. image In May 2001, Australasian Performing Rights Association celebrated its 75th anniversary by naming the Best Australian Songs of all time, as decided by a 100-member industry panel. "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" was ranked as the ninth song on the list.’ "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Maple syrup is a cultural pillar and an economic powerhouse in North America, particularly in Canada. Quebec alone produces nearly three-quarters of the global supply and even maintains a heavily guarded strategic reserve of the liquid, often compared to Fort Knox. The tradition dates back centuries to indigenous peoples who first discovered how to extract and reduce the tree sap, laying the foundation for an industry that now defines the region. The actual production remains an extreme test of patience and reduction. When a maple tree is tapped, the raw sap that flows out is completely clear and watery. It must be collected in massive volumes and poured into large evaporator pans to boil relentlessly over a wood fire. The math behind the operation is staggering—it takes roughly 40 liters of raw sap to yield a single liter of finished syrup. As the water evaporates, the sugars concentrate and slowly caramelize, developing that signature deep amber color. Before it cools, the hot liquid is strictly filtered to remove naturally occurring minerals and sugar crystals. It is immediately bottled while still piping hot, sealing in a pure, unrefined flavor that artificial pancake syrups can never replicate. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Who was Giovanni Boccaccio ? Complete Biography : 1️⃣. Introduction: Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–1375) stands as one of the three foundational figures of early Italian Renaissance literature, alongside Dante and Petrarch. If Dante gave Europe a theological epic and Petrarch gave it the introspective lyric voice, Boccaccio gave it realistic prose narrative and social storytelling. He is best known for his masterpiece " The Decameron " a work that transformed European prose fiction. However, Boccaccio was not only a storyteller; he was also a scholar, a humanist and one of the earliest interpreters of Dante. His importance lies in three areas: ♦️Development of vernacular prose ♦️Expansion of narrative realism ♦️Contribution to Renaissance humanism 2️⃣. Historical Background: 1. Birth and Early Life: Boccaccio was born in 1313, probably in Certaldo or Florence. His father was a merchant connected with the banking house of the Bardi. As a young man, Boccaccio was sent to Naples to learn commerce and later canon law. However, he abandoned both for literature. Naples was crucial in shaping his imagination. It was a cosmopolitan courtly center under King Robert of Anjou, rich in culture, classical learning and romance traditions. There, Boccaccio encountered: ♦️Courtly love poetry ♦️Classical mythology ♦️French romance literature This early exposure influenced his later narrative style. 2. The Black Death (1348): One of the most important historical events shaping Boccaccio’s work was the Black Death, which devastated Florence in 1348. The plague killed a significant portion of the population, including possibly people close to Boccaccio. The catastrophe deeply influenced his worldview and directly frames The Decameron. 3. Friendship with Petrarch: In 1350, Boccaccio met Petrarch. This meeting was decisive. Under Petrarch’s influence, Boccaccio turned more seriously toward classical scholarship and Latin studies. He became deeply involved in early humanism. Unlike Dante, Boccaccio personally knew Petrarch, making him a bridge between early medieval and Renaissance humanist thought. 3️⃣. Major Works: 1. The Decameron (c. 1348–1353): This is Boccaccio’s masterpiece and one of the foundational works of European prose fiction. Structure: ♦️100 stories ♦️Told over 10 days ♦️By 10 young people (7 women, 3 men) ♦️Who flee plague-stricken Florence to a countryside villa ♦️Each day, one member becomes “king” or “queen” and assigns a storytelling theme. Themes: ♦️Love (both noble and erotic) ♦️Fortune ♦️Intelligence and wit ♦️Clerical corruption ♦️Social hypocrisy ♦️Human adaptability The plague setting functions as a symbolic backdrop: while society collapses, storytelling becomes a means of survival and order. Literary Significance of The Decameron: ♦️Established prose narrative realism ♦️Portrayed merchants, clergy, women and common people ♦️Balanced moral seriousness with humor ♦️Challenged ecclesiastical corruption ♦️Celebrated human intelligence over blind authority ♦️It marks a shift from medieval allegory to Renaissance human-centered storytelling. 2. Early Romantic Works: Before The Decameron, Boccaccio wrote romances such as: ♦️Filocolo ♦️Filostrato ♦️Teseida These works show influence from French romance and classical epic. They are important for understanding his literary development but are less influential than The Decameron. 3. Scholarly and Humanist Works: Later in life, Boccaccio turned toward Latin scholarship. He wrote: ♦️Genealogia Deorum Gentilium (a mythological encyclopedia) ♦️Lectures on Dante (among the earliest public lectures on Dante) He helped preserve and interpret classical mythology for Renaissance scholars. 4️⃣. Themes in Boccaccio’s Work: 1. Human Nature: Unlike Dante’s moral absolutism, Boccaccio presents complex human behavior. His characters are: ♦️Clever ♦️Flawed ♦️Passionate ♦️Practical He neither condemns nor idealizes humanity; he observes it. 2. Fortune (Fortuna): Fortune plays a major role in many stories. Life is unpredictable, and survival depends on adaptability. This reflects Renaissance realism rather than medieval determinism. 3. Critique of Clergy: Many stories satirize corrupt monks, priests and religious hypocrisy. However, Boccaccio does not attack religion itself; he criticizes institutional corruption. 4. Women and Agency: Interestingly, women are central storytellers in The Decameron. The majority of narrators are female. Boccaccio portrays women as intelligent, strategic, and emotionally complex. 5️⃣. Style and Narrative Technique: Boccaccio’s prose style is: ♦️Clear and rhythmic ♦️Elegant yet direct ♦️Balanced between courtly sophistication and social realism He develops: ♦️Framed narrative structure ♦️Psychological realism ♦️Dialogue-driven storytelling His influence later extends to: ♦️Chaucer (especially The Canterbury Tales) ♦️Shakespeare ♦️European novella tradition 6️⃣. Relationship to Dante and Petrarch: Dante → Theological epic Petrarch → Psychological lyric Boccaccio → Social narrative prose If Dante represents cosmic order and Petrarch inner conflict, Boccaccio represents social life and human adaptability. Together, they form the foundation of Italian Renaissance literature. 7️⃣. Humanism and Intellectual Contribution: Boccaccio contributed significantly to Renaissance humanism by: ♦️Studying and preserving classical texts ♦️Promoting classical mythology ♦️Encouraging vernacular literature ♦️Giving public lectures on Dante He helped shift literary culture from purely theological dominance toward classical revival. 8️⃣. Influence on English Literature: Boccaccio strongly influenced: ♦️Geoffrey Chaucer (The Canterbury Tales) ♦️Renaissance prose fiction ♦️Later European narrative traditions Several of Chaucer’s tales derive from Boccaccio’s stories. 9️⃣. Later Life and Death: In his later years, Boccaccio became more religious and contemplative. He experienced financial difficulty and declining health. He died in 1375 in Certaldo, one year after Petrarch’s death. 🔟. Critical Evaluation: Boccaccio’s importance lies in: ♦️Creating modern narrative prose ♦️Depicting social diversity ♦️Establishing the novella form ♦️Bridging medieval romance and Renaissance realism ♦️He transformed storytelling into a vehicle for observing human society. 1️⃣1️⃣. Conclusion: Giovanni Boccaccio is not merely a storyteller of amusing tales. He is: ♦️A pioneer of Renaissance prose ♦️A humanist scholar ♦️A realist observer of society ♦️A foundational figure in European literature For English literature students, he is essential because he shapes the tradition that later leads to Chaucer and the development of narrative fiction. Without Boccaccio, the evolution of the modern short story and prose narrative would have been profoundly different. #boccaccio #renaissance #englishliterature "Pure signal, no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

To your surprise and delight, you discover that there are about three hundred species of sea pen! Unfortunately for you, none of them can be used for writing. Named for their resemblance to old-fashioned quills, sea pens are actually not single animals: They are colonies of polyps. All of the polyps work together and each has a role to play. There are feeding polyps that catch plankton, as well as polyps that circulate water to keep the colony balanced and upright. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image On this day in 1967, The Beatles single “Strawberry Fields Forever” debuted at #83 on the US Billboard charts (February 25) The John Lennon composition (credited to Lennon–McCartney) was a double A-side single with “Penny Lane”, and Lennon based the song on his childhood memories of playing in the garden of Strawberry Field, a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool. Like "Penny Lane", which Paul McCartney wrote in late 1966 in response to Lennon's new song, "Strawberry Fields Forever" conveys nostalgia for the Beatles' early years in Liverpool. While both songs refer to actual locations, McCartney said that the two pieces also had strong surrealistic and psychedelic overtones. George Martin, the Beatles' producer, recalled that when he first heard "Strawberry Fields Forever", he thought it conjured up a "hazy, impressionistic dreamworld". On the US Billboard Hot 100 the two sides of a single were counted separately whether defined as a double A-side or not (for example, "She's a Woman" reached #4 in 1964 despite being a B-side). "Penny Lane" topped the chart for one week, while "Strawberry Fields Forever" peaked at #8. The single was also #1 in Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway, and peaked at #5 in New Zealand. It peaked at #2 in the UK due to chart protocol whereby only the sales of the best-selling side of a double A-side were eligible, and the record's overall sales were effectively halved. "Strawberry Fields Forever" is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" and in 1999 was inducted into the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' Grammy Hall of Fame. #beatles, #thebeatles, #thebeatlesforever, #paulmccartney, #johnlennon, #georgeharrison, #ringostarr, #60smusic, #grammyhalloffame, #rockandrollhalloffame, #thefabfour, #dailyrockhistory, #strawberryfieldsforever, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image Beatles legend George Harrison was born in Liverpool, England, on this day in 1943 (February 25) The faces out front and in the headlines for the Beatles were often John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but George Harrison preferred to stay in the background, writing his songs, playing his guitar, and singing those beautiful harmonies. He embraced Indian culture and helped broaden the scope of popular music through his incorporation of Indian instrumentation and Hindu-aligned spirituality in the Beatles' work. Although the majority of the band’s songs were written by Lennon and McCartney, most Beatles albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions, including songs like Taxman", “While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and “Here Comes the Sun". After the band's break-up in 1970, Harrison released the triple album “All Things Must Pass”, a critically acclaimed work that produced his most successful hit single, "My Sweet Lord", a #1 hit around the world, the biggest-selling single of 1971 in the UK, and the very first #1 single by an ex-Beatle. In 1988, he co-founded the platinum-selling supergroup the Traveling Wilburys with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, originating from an idea discussed by Harrison and Lynne during the sessions for Harrison's 1987 album “Cloud Nine”. Harrison died of cancer on 29 November 2001, aged 58. In 2004, Harrison was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist by his former bandmates Lynne and Petty. He was also posthumously honoured with The Recording Academy's Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards in February 2015. #georgeharrison, #beatles, #travelingwillburys, #endoftheline, #mysweetlord, #herecomesthesun, #thebeatles, #revolver, #rubbersoul, #magicalmysterytour, #60smusic, #70smusic, #rockandrollhalloffame, #thisdayinrock, #rockhistory, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
