For Gaza-based marine ecologist Mohammed Abu Daya, research is a tool for resilience. Despite losing his home, his university office, and access to the ocean, Abu Daya continues his critical work from a displacement tent, collaborating with international experts to protect one of the Mediterranean's most vulnerable inhabitants: the critically endangered spinetail devil ray (Mobula mobular).
Abu Daya is one of only a handful of scientists globally specializing in these majestic creatures, which can grow up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) wide. In 2025, at the height of the war, he co-authored a groundbreaking satellite telemetry study.
The findings? A devil ray, personally tagged by Abu Daya off the coast of Gaza, undertook an extraordinary migratory journey to Spain before returning to the Levantine Sea a year later, proving that the Eastern Mediterranean is a vital seasonal sanctuary for the species.
"Science and conservation should always remain bridges that unite people, rather than divisions shaped by politics or conflict... Even in the most difficult circumstances, the commitment to knowledge, conservation, and peace must endure," Mohammed Abu Daya tells #Mongabay.
Before the conflict halted all maritime activity, Abu Daya worked closely with local communities. Following a massive, desperate harvest of rays by local fishers in 2013, driven by severe economic blockades and depleted coastal fish stocks, he launched a baseline data project to track fisheries and raise environmental awareness.
Today, while Gaza's universities lie in ruins and students attend classes under tarps, Abu Daya’s work continues remotely. He recently contributed to the global Sharks International 2026 conference, remaining determined to secure a future for these threatened marine giants.

But the real giant is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. From its base on the ocean floor to its summit, it measures 10,210 meters, surpassing Mount Everest by about 1,400 meters.
Only a portion of Mauna Kea rises above the water, reaching 4,207 meters above sea level.
Mount Everest is still the tallest mountain on Earth, but Mauna Kea is the real giant when you consider its total height: a giant hidden in the Pacific Ocean.

Le Mans Coupé
Six years of intensive development culminated in one of the most extreme supercars ever created from a luxury grand tourer. After thoroughly re-engineering the Jaguar XJ-S platform, Lister Cars launched the Le Mans in the late 1980s, with production spanning from 1985 to 1989.
Only the doors, windscreen glass, front suspension components, and alternator were retained from the original vehicle. Named to honor Jaguar's Le Mans victories in the 1980s, this four-seater featured aggressive bodywork with purposeful aerodynamic additions designed for 200-mph stability.
The dramatic visual transformation included wide fender flares, integrated air intakes, and a wraparound rear wing that gave the Le Mans its distinctive silhouette. At £88,000 initially (later rising to £160,000), this was decidedly not an affordable proposition.
Under the extensively modified hood sat a 7.0-liter version of Jaguar's V12 engine, comprehensively reworked with Cosworth components to produce approximately 496 horsepower. Performance figures included 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds, outpacing contemporary Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars.
With only around 20 to 30 examples of the Le Mans MkIII Coupé produced by the Leatherhead-based company, the Le Mans represented British engineering ambition at its most audacious.

On December 2, 1979, a 29-year-old woman from the Bronx went to a famous skyscraper in New York City.
She was going through a very difficult time in her life. She was facing serious financial problems and was about to lose her home. Feeling overwhelmed and hopeless, she climbed over the safety fence of the building’s 86th-floor outdoor observation deck.
She then jumped from the observation area in an attempt to end her life.
But something unexpected happened. A strong and sudden gust of wind, with speeds reaching around 38 miles per hour, pushed her body back toward the building instead of letting her fall straight down. Because of this unusual updraft, she did not fall to the street below.
Instead, she dropped only about 15 feet and landed on a narrow concrete ledge on the 85th floor of the building. She survived the impact, although she was badly injured.
A security officer working in the building soon found her. He carefully reached her and pulled her to safety through an open window.
She was quickly taken for medical help and was later reported to have survived the incident. Doctors said she had a fractured pelvis but no other life-threatening injuries.
The event shocked many people because survival from such a height was almost impossible. Her story later became known as one of the most unusual survival cases involving a fall from a skyscraper, where unexpected wind conditions played a major role in saving her life.

On this day in 1979, The Knack single “My Sharona” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #86 (June 23)
This catchy song with the alternating octave hook and killer guitar solo generated a tsunami of hype around the LA band…
Their debut single eventually went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart where it remained for a massive six weeks, and was #1 on Billboard's 1979 Top Pop Singles year-end chart.
The song was also #1 in Australia and Canada, and Top 10 in Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, France, and the UK.
It was also Capitol Records' fastest gold status debut single since the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in 1964, and has since gone on to sell more than 10 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time.
There was actually a real Sharona that lead vocalist and guitarist Doug Fieger wrote the song about, and that was his longtime girlfriend Sharona Alperin, whose photo appears on the single’s picture sleeve holding a copy of their LP “Get The Knack”.
Fieger recalled meeting her: "It was like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat; I fell in love with her instantly.
And when that happened, it sparked something and I started writing a lot of songs feverishly in a short amount of time."
Fieger and Alperin were engaged at one point but never married, and she went on to have a successful career in real estate in Los Angeles.
In a 2005 interview, Fieger said they remained "great friends", and Sharona Alperin visited Fieger regularly during the final months of his life when he was dying of cancer.
Fieger claimed that "My Sharona" was written in 15 minutes, and was allegedly mixed in an additional 15 minutes after the recording of the song was made in a single take (not including background vocals)!
Co-writer and Knack lead guitarist Berton Averre didn’t want to use Alperin's actual name in the song, but Fieger wanted it to be a direct expression of his feelings, and so it was…

On this day in 1972, the Eagles self-titled, debut LP debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #102 (June 24)
For their first album, Glenn Frey wanted Glyn Johns to be the producer as they liked a number of albums he produced for other artists, including The Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin.
After hearing the band, Johns was actually not that impressed, thinking that they sounded a bit confused and were lacking in cohesion.
But he was won over during a second listen in a rehearsal setting in Los Angeles, when all four in the band started singing harmonies in a song…
Johns recalled,
“There it was,….the sound. Extraordinary blend of voices, wonderful harmony sound, just stunning."
In the albums he produced for the Eagles, Johns emphasized the vocal blend of the band, and he has been credited with shaping the band into "the country-rock band with those high-flyin' harmonies".
The album peaked at #13 in Canada, and #22 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
It produced three songs that ended up becoming Eagles classics: “Peaceful Easy Feeling”, “Witchy Woman”, and “Take it Easy”.
“Eagles” was ranked #207 in the 2020 edition of Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
“Take It Easy" is part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll".

With the changing of the seasons, humpback whales are making their yearly migration from their summer grounds in Antarctica to their winter breeding grounds in the South Pacific. 
While on expedition in July 2023, we were fortunate to spot these humpback whales (including a mother and calf!) along the coast of Niue.
"We had whale sharks and humpbacks swim right past the Argo all day long, and as the weekend approached, the team had more time to explore the island itself," shared the expedition team at that time.
"It is a truly magical place, a unique and rare island community in the Pacific that has welcomed the entire Pristine Seas team again with open arms, and who continues to be a global leader in marine conservation and ocean protection."
