-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
According to the Visual Capitalist website, several Asian countries have recorded quite severe levels of marine waste and debris pollution, particularly plastic.
The Philippines (🇵🇭) ranks first in the world with 356,371 tons of marine debris, followed by India (🇮🇳) with 126,513 tons, and Malaysia (🇲🇾) in third place with 73,098 tons.
Indonesia (🇮🇩) is in fifth place with 56,333 tons. Marine debris is dominated by Asian countries, with the Philippines and Thailand (🇹🇭) in the top 10.
Only Brazil (🇧🇷), a non-Asian country, is on the list of countries with the worst marine debris pollution.
Outside of these 10 countries, the remaining marine debris worldwide totals approximately 156,012 tons, a truly alarming figure.
The presence of marine debris containing plastic and chemical waste threatens marine life, especially animals and coral reefs, triggering mass deaths of marine life and severe ecosystem damage.
Lack of awareness of the importance of protecting the environment, especially the sea, and the policies of unscrupulous companies that dispose of waste carelessly are key factors.
This is why Go Green campaigns, massive recycling, and limiting plastic use, as well as raising awareness about proper waste disposal, are crucial for reducing pollution levels, which are increasingly reaching alarming levels.

Boracay Dive Shops Fined for Price Fixing
The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) has ordered the Boracay Business Administration of Scuba Shops (BBASS) and its 39 member dive operators to pay a total of P2.17 million in fines and immediately cease their illegal price-fixing agreement.
According to the PCC, the association stifled competition in Boracay’s diving sector by enforcing minimum “floor prices,” including P3,000 for Discover Scuba Diving sessions and P25,000 for Open Water certification courses. The group also prohibited freebies such as complimentary dives, meals, or photos for tourists, capped commissions for tour guides and hotels at 10 percent, and threatened violators with fines and business closure.
While BBASS maintains that these rules were intended to protect livelihoods and ensure diver safety, the PCC emphasized that price-fixing arrangements are strictly prohibited under Philippine law and ultimately harm consumers by limiting choices and driving up costs.
The Commission has reminded local government units (LGUs) to maintain an open and competitive environment for tourism activities.
This development raises important questions about balancing consumer protection, fair competition, and sustainable business practices in Boracay, one of the Philippines’ premier tourist destinations. The case highlights ongoing efforts by regulators to prevent anti-competitive behavior in key tourism sectors.
Overall, at a time when we need to improve efforts to give tourists a better island experience, cases like this destroy those efforts.
