🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image 4 SENTENCES THAT WILL MAKE YOU WISER 1. Be okay with not being liked. Not everyone will understand your journey, and that's okay. Seeking everyone's approval only costs you your peace. 2. Accept that life won't always go as planned. Every setback carries a lesson. The more flexible your mind, the stronger you become. 3. Happiness begins within. You can't control every circumstance, but you can choose your response. Lasting peace comes from within, not from perfect conditions. 4. Stop stressing over what you can't control. Protect your energy by focusing on your actions, your mindset, and your character. That's where your true power lies. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image "Shifting baseline syndrome" is what scientists call this perception we have that the natural world has always been what we see – which isn't true. With each generation, we are losing a significant part of the planet's biodiversity, stolen by greedy extraction, overfishing, and environmental devastation, and we consider it "normal." And where are the divers in all of this? Why is it that not only the diving industry, certification agencies, operators, and we who enjoy the privilege of a still-living but very impoverished sea, are doing NOTHING or almost nothing to exert the necessary pressure on our (mis)governors to change this sad reality? Is diving just a hobby for you, or does it carry with it a commitment to exercising citizenship in defense of the Ocean? Wake up, people, there's still time! 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Have you ever visited Bontok, Ifugao, Benguet, Apayao & Kalinga and seen the frightening wooden Bakunawa masks for sale? Many assume they are ancient Mountain Province tribal carvings—but their story is far more fascinating. The Bakunawa is a legendary moon-devouring serpent from Visayan folklore, myths, and legends, not from the traditional beliefs of the Cordillera peoples. In Tagalog, "walang aswang sa BIBAK (Bontok, Ifugao, Benguet, Apayao & Kalinga); sila ang kinakatukatan." As tourism grew throughout the Cordillera, artisans and handicraft producers began creating Bakunawa masks for visitors seeking uniquely Philippine folk art. Today, these carvings are appreciated as beautiful decorative pieces inspired by one of the country's most enduring legends while also reflecting the evolution of the Philippine souvenir trade. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing," first published in the 1860 edition of *Leaves of Grass*, is one of the most joyful celebrations of ordinary people ever written in American poetry. At a time when the United States was rapidly expanding through industry, agriculture, and commerce, Whitman looked beyond politicians, generals, and famous leaders to discover the true music of the nation in the daily lives of working men and women. Often called the "Poet of Democracy," Whitman believed that every individual possessed equal worth and that the strength of a nation rested not in its wealth or power but in the dignity, freedom, and honest labour of its people. Instead of composing a patriotic poem filled with flags, battles, or heroic speeches, he created a living symphony in which every worker contributes a unique voice to the great chorus of America. The poem reflects Whitman's lifelong vision of a democratic society where every person, regardless of occupation or social standing, has a place, a purpose, and a song that deserves to be heard. The poem unfolds as a vibrant procession of voices, each representing a different profession and way of life. The mechanic, the carpenter, the mason, the boatman, the shoemaker, the hatter, the woodcutter, the ploughboy, the mother, the young wife, and the girl sewing or washing all sing their own "varied carols." These songs are not literal melodies but symbols of pride, dedication, and fulfillment found in honest work. Whitman deliberately avoids placing one occupation above another, suggesting instead that every form of meaningful labour contributes equally to the harmony of society. The repeated image of singing transforms ordinary work into an act of celebration, reminding readers that fulfilment often comes from embracing one's role with enthusiasm and purpose. By the poem's conclusion, the joyful chorus expands beyond the working day into the evening, where young people gather with open mouths to sing strong, melodious songs, suggesting that a healthy nation finds harmony not only in labour but also in fellowship, leisure, and shared happiness. Beneath its apparent simplicity, "I Hear America Singing" explores enduring themes of democracy, individuality, unity, freedom, equality, labour, optimism, and national identity. Whitman presents America not as a land defined by monuments or governments but as a living community built by countless ordinary individuals whose daily efforts sustain the nation. Each person sings "what belongs to him or her and to none else," emphasizing both personal identity and collective harmony. The poem beautifully balances individuality with unity, suggesting that true democracy does not erase differences but allows every unique voice to contribute to a greater whole. Written in Whitman's characteristic free verse, without strict rhyme or conventional meter, the poem itself embodies the freedom and openness that it celebrates, allowing its language to flow as naturally as the diverse voices it describes. More than a century and a half after its publication, "I Hear America Singing" continues to resonate because its central message reaches far beyond nineteenth-century America. It reminds readers that every society is ultimately built by ordinary people whose quiet dedication often goes unnoticed, and that dignity belongs not to status or wealth but to honest effort and meaningful contribution. In an age when work is often measured by prestige rather than purpose, Whitman's poem gently restores our appreciation for every individual who builds, creates, nurtures, teaches, serves, and sustains the world around us. Its enduring beauty lies in its unwavering faith that when every voice is valued and every person is free to contribute their unique gift, the song of humanity becomes richer, stronger, and infinitely more beautiful. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image A routine flight over Hawaii turned into one of the most remarkable survival stories in aviation history when a Boeing 737 suffered a catastrophic structural failure at 24,000 feet. During the flight, a large section of the aircraft's upper fuselage suddenly tore away, exposing part of the cabin to the open sky and causing rapid decompression. Passengers were met with powerful winds and flying debris as the aircraft sustained severe structural damage. Despite the extraordinary situation, the flight crew maintained control of the aircraft. Working through multiple system failures and the challenges created by the damaged airframe, they safely descended and landed the airplane at Kahului Airport on the island of Maui. The accident became one of the most extensively investigated structural failures in commercial aviation. Investigators determined that years of repeated pressurization cycles, combined with corrosion and metal fatigue, had weakened the aircraft's fuselage until it failed during flight. The incident led to major changes in how aging aircraft are inspected and maintained. Airlines and aviation regulators around the world introduced stricter inspection programs, particularly for older airplanes that had accumulated large numbers of takeoff and landing cycles. Although one flight attendant tragically lost her life during the accident, the successful emergency landing saved the lives of nearly everyone else on board. The event remains a powerful example of how aircraft design, crew training, and emergency procedures can work together to prevent an even greater tragedy. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Here's the 1957 Studebaker-Packard Astral Concept. image Designed with one wheel, gyro-stabilization, and nuclear power. The Astral made its debut in 1957 at the South Bend Art Center, then was shown again at the Geneva Motor Show. image This car went all out with its sci-fi styling. The entire car was balanced on one wheel, using gyroscope technology and it was said to hover over water. To protect the driver and the passengers from radiation, the Astral would have been equipped with some kind of protective energy curtain, like a forcefield, that would make collisions impossible and certainly make the Astral's ionic nuclear engine seem a bit more reasonable. Studebaker-Packard didn't last long enough to see the wild future in which this car could be produced, as Packard disappeared a few years after the Astral was released, followed closely behind by Studebaker. image The concept was shuttled from auto shows to dealership events before finally finding a home along with its more practical brothers at the Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles, CA.
