On this day in 1985, the re-release of the Billy Idol single “White Wedding” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #52 (July 13)
Originally released in 1982, and one of his most recognizable tracks, the second single from Billy Idol’s self-titled debut LP after Gen X split, went to #1 in Canada, #5 in New Zealand, and #9 in Australia.
In the US, it reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100, and didn’t chart in the UK until its re-release there in 1985, when it was re-issued to promote the “Vital Idol” remix album.
The music video, featuring Idol attending a goth-style wedding, is one of his best-known.
The bride is played by Perri Lister, Idol's real-life girlfriend at the time, and she’s also one of the three leather-clad dancers.

In the remote Pacific Ocean, off the eastern coast of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia, lies the ancient stone city of Nan Madol. Built on more than 90 artificial islets connected by canals, the abandoned settlement has puzzled historians and archaeologists for centuries.
Construction of Nan Madol began around the 12th century under the Saudeleur Dynasty. The city served as the dynasty's political and ceremonial center for several hundred years before it was abandoned in the early 17th century.
The site was built using thousands of massive basalt columns, some weighing several tons. The stones were stacked without mortar to create walls, temples, tombs, and ceremonial structures. Because the city was constructed on small coral islets surrounded by water, researchers have long questioned how such enormous stones were transported and assembled using the technology available at the time.
Over the years, numerous explanations have been proposed. Some researchers believe the basalt was transported by rafts or canoes from nearby volcanic formations, while others suggest a combination of engineering techniques and human labor made the construction possible. However, no historical records describing the building process have ever been discovered, and no explanation has been universally accepted.
Local traditions preserve legends describing supernatural beings who helped build the city, but no archaeological evidence has supported these accounts. Modern excavations have revealed valuable information about the site's history and the people who lived there, yet they have not fully explained how the massive construction project was accomplished.
Despite decades of archaeological research, the precise methods used to transport and assemble the massive basalt stones remain the subject of ongoing study. The combination of Nan Madol's remote location, enormous stone architecture, and limited historical records continues to make the site one of the ancient world's most remarkable archaeological mysteries.
The Nan Madol Mystery remains one of the most fascinating unsolved engineering questions in ancient history, continuing to attract historians, archaeologists, and researchers from around the world.
Historical significance: Nan Madol is one of the largest surviving ceremonial complexes ever constructed in Oceania and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its unique architecture and still-debated construction methods continue to provide important insight into the achievements of the ancient Saudeleur civilization while leaving significant historical questions unanswered.
